i mean you can call him “a glorified extra” all you want and it’s not untrue, to a certain degree, but that’s also not how movies work

but they’re also all made up terms and nothing is real so do whatever you want

WAIT I HAVE HAD A THOUGHT and you are smart person who knows things so here is a question. Is... Is Mark Hamill technically an extra in The Force Awakens? He appears only briefly and in a non-speaking capacity. Or is it different because he is a clear focal point of the scene and (I'm assuming) was given direction pertaining specifically to him?

Mark Hamill has second billing on this movie after Harrison Ford. He is not an extra. He’s a named character, cast specifically, who is the only scene partner with the lead - none of which would be true of an extra.

Whether or not your an extra has nothing to do with lines you may or may not have, but rather your function in the scene. Extras are there as set dressing, essentially, to make shots more realistic. That’s not the purpose of Luke in the last scene.
