buster wolf is dead

I’m not sure where to begin. They were just songs I made in my bedroom. Songs meant to help me compartmentalize my own life. Self indulgent ditties I made to keep busy and feel productive. Catharsis doesn’t quite cut it. I never meant for them to be publicly consumed.

But here I am three years, three LPs, two EPs, and hundreds of beats later, after performing countless shows (shows in NYC, Chicago, Canada, and of course my lovely little Tallahassee) and sharing stages with the likes of Oddisee, Busdriver, Milo, Afroman, and KRS One (twice!). Here I am on an amazing DIY record label whose roster consists of some of the most amazing and talented people I will ever know. Here I am about to perform another hip hop show with Artisan P, TaReef KnockOut and Cap 6. Here I am at this coffee shop typing out this confession, this notice of resignation. Here I am feeling like I just don’t want to do it anymore. 

I’ve put a lot of thought into it. It was always meant to be for me primarily. I said I’d do it until it wasn’t fun anymore and it isn’t. Specifically, I’m not getting the same feeling of self expression I used to get from it. Hip Hop is a strange beast. As much as I love it, it’s beginning to feel too formulaic. Too limiting. Not to mention it is the most over saturated genre of music and the easiest to get into. Got a laptop? Jack some beats, give yourself a name with a dollar sign in it, make a Soundcloud account, start some Twitter beef, et voilà - you are a rapper. Congrats. 

I’m getting too old for this shit. Running out of things to say. At least things I can put into the context of a rap song. What I need is to be able to write anything. To draw and paint again. To edit videos and take photos. This whole buster wolf thing just has me feeling boxed up and confined to a medium I am no longer in love with. 

I’m not inspired anymore. And that is a problem. Perhaps this is a temporary hiatus. Maybe I’ll find a new muse and come back with renewed vigor. But it’s just not a priority for me anymore. I want to tap neglected synapses and breathe the air at different elevations. I want to converse with the ghost of me. 

I’ll still be making beats and collaborating with my Fuzzzy Nickels family on occasion. That won’t stop anytime soon. But this year’s Rotten Fest in Tallahassee will likely be my final performance as Buster Wolf. It’s been an amazing ride. But it’s time to see what else I can do. I need a soft reset. I want to re-contextualize things and catalogue them in my own way, without any expectations or fanfare. 

Thank you to all the folks that supported and showed love. Thank you to all of the amazing artists I have collaborated with. I hope the next adventure will be as memorable as this one.
