Aggretsuko Discourse

I can’t believe I have to be the one to do this sort of thing, but I’ve seen a couple post about how “racist it is that the only black VA is voicing a gorilla” and I wanted to nip it in the butt before it spirals out of control and dampens a great anime. Plus I’ve also noticed how none of this posts even mention the VA by name, which is a shame, so here she is:

This is G.K. Bowes, the voice actress in question. As far as I can tell, she has been pretty active as a VA since 2008, but even has work dating back to 2004 in the Samurai Warriors game. I, personally, am familiar with her as Mairu Orihara from DurararaX2 before Aggretsuko.

She also voices Tsunoda in Aggretsuko as well, but I’ve seen like one other post that brings that up, so I wanted to drop that bit of info in this post as well.

Now for the real kicker for how silly this latest discourse for the show. G.K. Bowes herself has said that she doesn’t identify herself as black. In her own words she has said, “I am a mix of Polynesian, Native American, Latin, and Middle Eastern.” back in an interview in 2015.

This is what I was able to find after a quick five minute search on Google/Wikipedia by checking sources. Once again, PLEASE take the time to look over issues like these before trying to stir up discourse. Gori is one of my favorite characters in Aggretsuko, and G.K. Bowes did a great job dubbing her.
