VENICE — Friday’s three-hour occupation of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection (PGC) in Venice by arts and activist organizations, including Gulf Labor, GULF (Gulf Ultra Luxury Faction), Sale Docks, and Macao, resulted in a brief meeting between a number of protesters and members of the PGC staff. Hyperallergic was the only arts publication live at the scene when the protesters emerged from the talks and recorded their thoughts on the discussion.

Last night, The Illuminator was in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District to project mayday messages on the facade of the soon-to-be-opened Whitney Museum, while a group of two dozen protesters supported by 23 sponsoring organizations, launched a guerrilla inauguration for the “fracked gas line museum.”

On Friday, January 23, some of the most progressive thinkers about the financial realities facing artists will convene in the Great Hall of Manhattan’s Cooper Union to explore a topic largely ignored in the art world: the artist as debtor. Organized by artists Noah Fischer and Coco Fusco, the one-day gathering will bring together people like Andrew Ross, the author of Creditocracy, academic Greg Scholette, artist William Powhida and Martha Rosler, writers Brian Kuan Wood and Julieta Aranda of e-flux, members of the W.A.G.E. activist group, and others to discuss the plight of the artist in the age of speculative capitalism.

Protesters Stage Intervention at Guggenheim’s Futurist Exhibition

Last night’s protest action at New York’s Guggenheim Museum by the Gulf Ultra Luxury Faction (G.U.L.F.) is the group’s fourth intervention and the latest to raise awareness about the labor conditions on Saadiyat Island in the United Arab Emirates. The group attempted to unfurl a banner in the atrium of the Upper East Side museum, while other members browsing the Futurist art exhibition taped up Futurist-inspired graphics with messages targeting museum trustees and other labor-related messages, including “No Museum Built on Death” and “Chairman Mack, No Time to Waste.” A number of G.U.L.F. protesters also distributed flyers to museum visitors with a statement from G.U.L.F.
