Family and the Institution of Alice Academy

Was thinking about this ever since someone (I forgot specifically who, sorry) posed a question like this in the GA discord, asking about (I think) Natsume's extended family or something like that. It was a really interesting concept that I've been thinking a lot about since it was brought up, so here are the thoughts I've accumulated. I'll try to be concise but I have a LOT of thoughts and my brain is messy.

My general opinion at the end of all this thinking I did is that I don't think Academy students typically have very close familial ties after graduating.

I think the most apparent reason for that would be that students are expected to graduate when they are twenty years old. Our main four are exceptions to the rule, coming to the Academy pretty late in life. Most children are taken early, as toddlers or even babies. Natsume, Ruka, and Hotaru's families did all they could to avoid Academy scouting. Mikan was entirely accidental--if she had never met Hotaru, she might have never even found out she was an Alice to begin with. That being said, most kids were separated from their families at a very young age, only to be allowed to reunite with them once they're already adults. For many students, they've been away from their parents for close to two decades.

On top of that, the Academy doesn't allow visitations or phone calls and severely restricts letter communications. Only one child from each class is allowed to return home for one week each year, and that one week does not do much to make up for all the time spent at school.

My point is that by the time students are allowed to see their families again, that familial bond has already been severed, for all intents and purposes. That feeling of closeness and protection no longer exists. Students will feel more closeness and connection to their classmates and even to their teachers than to their parents or siblings, and as a result, I can imagine many graduates not even bothering to visit their families.

While I was pondering this, I made the connection between Academy students and the real life example of a similar situation with Janissaries from the Ottoman Empire. Basically, Janissaries were children stolen from the subjugated people under Ottoman rule. They were taken for the purpose of a "child levy", also known as a "blood tax." Some children were even willingly given by their families due to the possibility of socially advancing, and because the children were promised first class status (sound familiar?). Essentially the children were taken, forced to comply with Ottoman standards and traditions (including forced conversions and circumcisions), and then trained for military service. These soldiers would actually end up being incredibly loyal and efficient, despite likely never seeing their families again.

(Edit: forced circumcisions are particularly heinous when you consider that the children were typically at least 10 years old at the time they were taken.... so.... uh.... not pleasant.... But also interesting that the Janissaries were typically much older than the Alice children at the time of being taken.)

That level of separation doesn't endear ties; it severs them. These Janissaries--very often forcefully taken from their families--ended up growing up with very little connection to their parents or siblings. The feeling of belonging to their previous communities was gone. Absence does not always make the heart grow fonder. This was done as a means of creating a strong military force but also to disillusion subjugated communities and tear away their hope. Their children could always be taken; their communities could always be crushed, even without the use of physical force. It's a very effective tool to oppress a group of people.

(There's actually a lot of similarities between Academy children and Janissaries beside the separation of children from their families. They were also paid for their service and were high ranking; the Academy students are given an allowance and many of them, despite being stolen from their families, have a sense of superiority over non-Alices. They feel like they are treasures, and are of higher value and rank. Additionally, Academy students, especially in the DA class, are highly trained and efficient child soldiers, much like the Janissaries. Janissaries are actually a super interesting historical topic and are worth looking into!)

We can even see the effect of this distance when Yuka escapes the Academy and runs away to her family. Yuka was essentially sold to the Academy, with her parents trading her in exchange for money and status. She was very young, far too young to really understand that her parents had abandoned her. As a result, she romanticized her bond with them, and the longer she was separated from them, the more that bond became fantastical. She made many attempts to escape the school to reunite with her parents and she fantasized about seeing them again. When she finally is able to, it's nothing like she imagined. They're cold, and unfamiliar. They don't recognize her. She doesn't know her brothers. They're related, but there's no real connection.

"I shouldn't have come here."

Yuka's is an extreme example, but I'm sure she's not an exception. For most Academy students, the almost 20 years of separation from their parents would be too much to ignore. They would not recognize each other, or be close. I'm sure many parents did not sell their children like Yuka's family did, but the bond between child and family had not been nurtured the way it should have been, resulting in coldness and distance.

Because of that, I doubt most students even bother seeking their families out, or even if they do, it's to visit a few times before starting a new life with a career. That familial bond, now broken, is difficult to repair. The connections people often feel with their families or hometowns is something Academy students instead feel with each other. They are all Alices, all in the same boat together. That feeling of superiority that many kids feel means they view each other as on the same level, and I'm sure that could interfere with family connection as well.

Thus, I don't think there's many multigenerational Alice families out there with close bonds. I don't think families like Natsume's have strong ties with grandparents and aunts and uncles and cousins. Even the sibling bonds at the Academy are stunted, with the Imai and Shouda siblings being the prime examples of that.

The Imai siblings have a significant age difference, yes, but additionally the Imai parents had a very different approach to Hotaru after seeing what happened with Subaru. They refused to hand her over as easily, wanting to show her important things in life and build happy memories for as long as they could. Even when Hotaru does enter the school, it's more than six months before she even comes across her brother, since the high school and elementary school are not integrated with each other and they do not belong to the same ability class. Similarly, the Shouda siblings are in different ability classes but they have a much smaller age gap. Despite this, Sumire refers to her brother very respectfully, indicating that there isn't a particular closeness.

The Imais fight against this divide, and put in genuine effort into rebuilding their relationship, but it's a difficult process, and one they struggle to admit to for a long time and for various reasons. Familial closeness is not encouraged, not even within the Academy.

(Though Natsume's bond with Aoi is exploited and the school does rely on him caring for her to take advantage of him, but ultimately he is kept from seeing her. Thus, that bond is also severed despite being exploited.)

Additionally, it would make sense to me if many Alice graduates decided to, upon having children, avoid scouting, like Natsume's parents did, and thus ended up moving around a lot to escape Academy notice. Moving around like that and laying low means that you're not going to be hosting huge family reunions or inviting relatives over often, even if all the other points were moot.

Finally, I think all this creates further obstacles for Yuka's wish to "have a family." At some point she says that, for normal people, the desire to settle down with someone and start a family is a pretty modest goal, but for Alices it's almost impossible. Escaping from the school, or even graduating, is a struggle. And you can have a kid, but it's likely that child will be taken from you, just as you were taken, and by the time the child graduates, they will have no connection with you. Wanting to be a potential grandparent, for example, might seem like a definite impossibility, since being a real parent is impossible.

It's even more proof that the Academy exists as an institution to subjugate and undermine Alices, as children and then as parents. Ultimately, an Alice never has control, not as a child and not even as an adult. The pain doesn't end once you've graduated; in fact, it never does.

Let's Talk About NatsuMikan: Mikan (pt. 40)

Hey! I played Just Dance with Zoe and then decided I was just gonna post this last part because I don't want it hanging over me. It's July and I just exercised and it's really friggin' hot and I'm sweating but I'm gonna post this so I don't forget tomorrow.

That's right, folks! Just one more part in the forty part essay special by yours truly about everyone's favorite shoujo manga couple (I speak for everyone on the planet, yes)!

Kageki no Kuni no Alice Chapter Four

Kageki is a step-up from the last few chapters because… well, because I get to pretend like those chapters just didn’t happen. There’s a lot I don’t like about Kageki, but I like the NatsuMikan, which there is a fair amount of! And that’s what I’ll be discussing today. Hopefully that’ll lighten the mood from last time. Though! I don't have much new to say that I didn't already say in Natsume's version. I'll do my best so we can end on a high note!

Natsume and Mikan are at the Opera School in order to visit Aoi, because they do everything together. But Natsume is also being ridiculously cold to one of Aoi’s classmates, Tsubasa’s sister, for no real reason. So Mikan and Aoi both scold him for being mean. Mikan apologizes for Natsume’s sake and we get a glimpse of the fact that they both have matching promise rings. 

RINGS!!!! They're gonna get married!!!

This is pretty big because as far as we know, Mikan just got back to the Academy a few weeks ago, and only part of her memories were recovered, but somehow in that time, her romance with Natsume has rekindled enough that she once more wants to get married to him… though this rekindling occurred off-page. Sigh. 

This chapter is presented in a strange way, jumping around in time, starting with a confrontation and then rewinding. I think it’s to introduce Natsume and Mikan right away for fans so they keep reading, but it makes things jumbled up. Natsume is as handsome and popular as ever, and quickly gets the attention of the Opera Troupe girls, but this excitement is dampened by Mikan’s enthusiastic arrival because oh dang he’s taken. 

That's right!

Mikan is excited to meet Hikari, because she loves Tsubasa, and it’s funny to see her speaking for herself and Natsume (because they are an item!), much to his chagrin, loudly proclaiming their joint appreciation for Tsubasa’s care. What I like about that is that Mikan and Natsume are a unit at this point, which is what makes her feel comfortable speaking for his feelings in the first place. “I” becomes “we.”

Hikari grabs onto this, that Mikan knows Tsubasa, and tries to get more information out of her. Mikan is affected by pretty faces, as we know, and Hikari is beautiful (or handsome? Since she’s characterized by a sense of masculinity in this story but honestly I've never read this manga in its entirety so I wouldn't really know), so she gets overwhelmed and Natsume ultimately ruins the mood again by stressing to Hikari that her brother wants her to leave.

I'm so delighted we can get back to NM content that makes me feel something!

Mikan scolds him for being harsh, though he claims he’s just not interested in sugarcoating. Hikari gets depressed and Mikan is again affected, though Natsume doesn’t like that. Then Thoma arrives, and the atmosphere between him and Natsume tenses, which spurs Mikan to ask what their relationship is. It could be simple curiosity or actual jealousy, whichever. If it is jealousy, then it’s interesting to note that the both of them are a little possessive of the other. Mikan certainly doesn’t seem to mind being monopolized by Natsume, but this could suggest she’s monopolizing him too. 

Natsume starts to leave and Mikan rushes after him. That makes me think that she could have been feeling jealousy, but mostly that she is just as intent on spending as much time together as he is. He can’t leave without her when she came to spend time with him! 

They are a married couple, even if they're not married yet.

When they leave, they’re joined by Narumi, who calls Natsume kind and thus gives Mikan a new impression of what he was doing with Hikari. It’s hard to tell with Natsume, honestly, because his kindness and cruelty all look the same. When Natsume confronts Naru by asking if Hikari was dragged into the school for Thoma’s sake, Naru denies it. Then he brings up the manipulative action of scouting Mikan for the Academy, leading to their meeting and falling in love. He turns to Mikan and asks if she thinks that was a mistake, coming to the Academy and meeting everyone.

It's refreshing to go back to "everyone" again, to remember the sheer number of people Mikan loves. Her alice stone was created by the thoughts of many loved ones, after all, not just Natsume, not just Hotaru. There is not just one name written on her heart.

She must no longer hide behind everyone or we... She can initiate affection like this. Isn't that amazing?

She grabs Natsume’s hand and says “Not at all!” looking him straight in the eyes, so he knows she’s telling him, “How could I regret something that brought me to you?” This makes it personal. Yes, she's happy to have met everyone else and they are all dear, but reassuring Natsume means letting him know how much he specifically matters to her. She trusts Narumi because she’s sure he has good intentions. After all, with everything that happened on her side of things, Narumi seems to have only been helpful. This is also a callback to Narumi requesting that Mikan have faith in him, despite his recent betrayal with the letters. Mikan chose to trust him then and never stopped. Natsume seems to cave, because he's weak when it comes to her, but he admonishes Naru for being manipulative.

Natsume then tells Mikan not to hang around Naru or Hikari anymore, just a little taste of what Natsume monopolizing Mikan looks like. He obviously knows that Mikan will not listen to that, but it’s his way of communicating that he dislikes Naru manipulating her or the way she behaved around Hikari. Mikan just says “huh?” though, so his message might not have gone through the way he liked.

Chapter Five

There’s not much I can analyze in Kageki that I didn’t already mention in Natsume’s version because they spend literally all their time together. On top of that, we get little of their perspectives, and mainly see them through Hikari’s eyes. So if this is short or minimal… oops.

Hikari is being stalked and bullied by Bear, and Natsume gets annoyed that she’s not angrier with him. This is a plot thing, but I always think of Mikan and how much I love her rage and how Higuchi ultimately drained her of all of it for the sake of being a smiley girl who makes everyone happy even to her own detriment. To me, he might be saying these words to Hikari, but he’s talking to Mikan too.

We're not just talking about Hikari, are we?

Mikan and Natsume are here as loving parents to pick Bear up from school, and Mikan is more focused on gathering Bear while Natsume is scolding Hikari. When Hikari’s cousin arrives to defend her, claiming that Hikari is just incredibly disciplined with her feelings, Natsume counters that she’s really just repressing them. (SOUNDS LIKE MIKAN!) I don’t think Natsume would be as adamant about this if it didn’t connect to Mikan. Maybe this is something they talk about, or something that will soon become a conversation. In any case, Mikan doesn’t seem to take any of what he’s saying personally, so maybe it’s not getting through to her.

In any case, Natsume goes a little overboard insulting Thoma, who instantly dismisses him by telling him to go home, which he does, but not before setting a fire that Mikan rushes to put out. After that, Mikan rushes after him. Because she has to be wherever he is. It's not just Natsume monopolizing her. It goes both ways.

There’s a big to-do about Hikari and Bear and anger and acting and Tsubasa, which I won’t get into mainly because I don’t really care. All that matters is Natsume using a non-burning fire and Mikan being impressed at the control he has over his alice. Like, "Wow, my boyfriend is so cool!"

Chapter 5.5 Omake

This omake takes place after Natsume was ordered to go home, so he and Mikan are doing just that, hand in hand. Where he goes, she goes, and vice versa. A clingy couple.

Mikan asks what’s up with Natsume’s behavior with Thoma and Narumi pops out of the blue to explain that Natsume took her absence hard and that he strayed from the right path. Mikan is happy to see Naru; Natsume isn’t. All typical. But Mikan is confused because if Natsume skipped grades, shouldn’t that mean he was a good student and worked hard? And Naru says yes, that he did work hard, but by going on missions (THAT’S A CRIME NARUMI). Mikan is instantly concerned, because she watched him die once before and doesn’t ever want to experience that loss again, so Narumi assures her that none of the missions were at all physically taxing. That doesn’t eliminate her concern, though, until Natsume messes with her a little. 

In any case, Natsume re-enrolled as a high schooler when Mikan returned, so he could capitalize on her new presence. Mikan is excited to see Shiki and Narumi again when they appear, and they offer to show her Natsume’s middle school pics which she is excited to see until Natsume pulls her away, greedily. This chapter further teases Mikan and Natsume's rings, their inevitable wedding. Additionally, we see that there's some conversations yet to be had, particularly about what Natsume has been up to without her. She obviously wants to have these discussions, since she asks questions and then is so eager to see his middle school pictures, but it seems like Natsume is content now to completely leave that era in the past now that he has his girlfriend back.

Chapter Six

Mikan and the SA class are getting ready for the Culture Fest. Natsume complains about the Opera School students coming to visit the Academy campus during such a busy time, but he’s not really doing anything, so it feels unfair for him to say. 

Mikan doesn’t seem to mind that she’s being followed by a leech, and she teases him. She doesn't need him to help. He's just there so they can be together, and if he doesn't contribute anything, then that's fine too, as long as he's around. But the teasing never ends, because they wouldn't be NatsuMikan without it. This is crucial, because their bickering was never a cover-up for anything like it sometimes is for other bickering couples. For them, the bickering was always a relief. For Natsume, he could act immature and childish with someone when he’d been forced into a far more adult role in his life. For Mikan, it’s a way for her to cheer up when she’s feeling down, because bickering with him makes them both happy. The fact that they’re now officially a couple doesn’t eliminate the bickering, it just eliminates the pretense about it.

I'm sniffling...

Chapter 11.5 Omake

This is an outtake chapter surrounding Hikari searching for inspiration for her acting in a kiss scene. Tsubasa can’t help her for some reason, even though he’s in a relationship (inexplicably, his relationship is described as “new,” even though he and Misaki have been dating for like five years at this point). Thus, she must look elsewhere for romantic inspiration. And where better than Natsume and Mikan out and eating floating soft serve ice cream together?

She gets the ice cream all over her face and, since there’s nobody around, he licks it off her. She seems to find that silly and cute and laughs as he does so, though she is blushing. Will Mikan ever stop blushing around Natsume though? I don’t think so. It’s nice though that their affection is so reciprocal now. She doesn’t even freak out, really, which implies that there’s more intimacy to this extent happening away from the reader’s prying eyes. 

This was given to us because Higuchi felt bad about what she made us go through with the wretched final chapters. I appreciate the apology, actually, but I think we all agree we could use some more apologies of this nature.

They’re interrupted and it’s only then that Mikan freaks out, embarrassed to be seen doing something so weird. Very interesting! Maybe they'll work up to PDA status later. Nobody likes a voyeur, which is what the others are right now, but getting spied on while you're kissing is a little different than typical PDA. Who knows!

Conclusion

This is my last NM conclusion as far as I know now. How cute they are in this little spin-off manga! It lifts my spirits. Hopefully, seeing them all cutesy lifted your spirits too.

Anyway, friends, I'm genuinely remorseful that the last few parts of this essay were so negative and bitter. I'm usually not one to linger on those parts of GA. My mind is firmly rooted in various AU endings so I tend to be pretty chill about my feelings, but when I have to specifically address everything, it all comes to the surface and I get a little bitter. I'm really sorry it had to be that way.

In any case, despite the bitterness towards the end, writing this essay was genuinely a blast for me. It was nice to put my feelings about this manga into words.

I started writing this essay on April 12, 2015 (which means I was sixteen at the time). I always knew the exact order I'd write this essay in, because my main motivation in analyzing GA was to present my thesis about Mikan genuinely being in love with Natsume. Back then, I'd seen one too many tumblr posts about Mikan being "obligated" to be with Natsume because he was dying or because of comphet or because Natsume scared her or silly things like that and it pissed me off. Additionally, I was bombarded with people calling Mikan a Mary Sue or disregarding her character. I remember seeing posts like that in the dark ages and thinking, "Did these people even read the manga? Do they even pay attention to Mikan?"

I'd see those posts and roll my eyes. I'd read a grossly OOC Mikan in a fic and sigh exasperatedly. I'd see people disparaging her and I'd disapprove. I'd know deep down that Mikan does love Natsume and that she's much more than people are leading on. I knew they were wrong, but I more or less left it at that.

But then I'd ask myself what exactly it was that they were missing and I'd have to confront the fact that I was thinking based on vibes and "just because" and there's no evidence in that. Was I paying much attention to her either? So one day, probably in between ranting to Zoe, I opened up a Google Doc and decided I'd do the hard work and analyze the whole fucking manga to prove my point. Besides, there was no real analysis for NM out there, so I'd take one for the team and do it. But it wasn't enough to analyze NM. There's too much going on there to leave it to one essay.

After all, most people think of anime scenes when they think of the earlier chapters, and that's not accurate, so I'd have to distinguish between the anime and the manga. But it's not enough to simply distinguish! The anime contains scenes worth discussing, since NM is pretty different there. Thus, the essay had to be divided between manga and anime. But that wasn't enough, either, because analyzing Natsume and Mikan's feelings in one essay was sure to give me a headache, which means this project had to be three parts, and Mikan had to be last. She always had to be last, my grand finale to prove that she was no Mary Sue, that her love for Natsume was built up from the beginning, and that she had depth and growth that should be appreciated.

It is now July 27, 2023 at around 11 PM. I'm now finished.

Altogether, across all three essays, I wrote about 243,240 words about NatsuMikan. Hundreds of pages in my Google Docs. This would be a huge book. And if anyone out there read all of it? You're a damn trooper. I appreciate you so much.

To all my readers, the ones who stuck with me from the beginning, or the ones who find it long after I press post on this last one, the ones who read each word, or the ones who skimmed to the analysis of their favorite scenes, I thank you. To everyone who left a comment, I thank you. To everyone who reached out to tell me their thoughts, I thank you. Today I finish a very long project that I've had on my mind since I was a teenager. Tomorrow I'll pursue another. I can't imagine I'll ever stop coming up with projects for GA. :)

New Year's Arc Kimono

Hello everyone! I reread one of my Natsume essays from the New Year's Arc and I noticed that he had a very specific flower all over his kimono, and it caught my attention. So I kinda wanted to chat about the kimono flowers the characters wear and what they might mean.

DISCLAIMER: I am not a flower or kimono expert! I am not an expert in Japanese culture! I am just doing surface level research on what flowers/shapes I can recognize on the character's kimonos. I could be entirely off base. BUT I don't think it's wrong to assume the flowers might mean something. Higuchi Tachibana did a flower series during the Sports Fest Arc where she demonstrates knowledge of flower symbolism and assigns a few of her characters a flower/plant for their role in that arc (Mikan as hydrangea, Ruka as sunflower, etc.). Also considering that the characters get assigned a flower princess name in the New Year's Arc, it feels justified to pursue this. Anyone who knows more about flowers, their meanings, their meanings across culture, and especially kimono is welcome to correct me or to elaborate. Thank you.

I will not be discussing everyone's kimono, for a couple of reasons.

I can't tell what flower it is.

The same design is worn by multiple characters (the Elementary Schoolers' party designs, two for boys and two for girls, will not be mentioned here).

Didn't get a good look at the kimono for whatever reason.

I don't want to.

I will not be discussing the geometric patterns. For the most part, from what I can tell, these have lucky, fortunate, and joyful connotations on a kimono, like most of these flowers, but unlike flowers, I have no idea what they might mean off a kimono. Likewise, it could have no particular meaning. That's why Tsubasa is not featured here, since he's wearing geometric patterns.

Anyway, considering how important design and art are to kimono, I feel like it's all discussion worth having since kimono is art. Again, I invite people who know more than me to share if they want. I'm just starting a conversation I find interesting.

Let's get started!

Nobara.

I almost didn't include her, because she's wearing one of two Middle School kimono designs (Misaki is wearing the other), so it's not like it's unique to her. Also, it's not a flower. Both designs include butterflies, but one is light and the other is dark. I'm including Nobara because she plays a very important role in this arc and we don't see many other girls from the Middle School here, so I think it's worth discussing.

Nobara has butterflies covering nearly all of the fabric of her kimono. Some preliminary research has informed me that in Japan, butterflies are lucky and also connote femininity, cycles, and eternity. One could argue it was lucky that Nobara noticed Natsume and warned Tsubasa, since it turned the tide against the Discipline Squad, but there's one more meaning that is more significant to me.

Butterflies represent the soul, and when that's combined with its other connotation of transformation, it might bring to mind Nobara's normal personality and how it switches to her "doll" personality under hypnosis, which is revealed to us in this arc. Additionally, butterflies are seen as guides to the afterlife, which is significant when you consider Natsume's kimono. After all, Natsume is bamboozled into a trap by a trick of Nobara being posed to look like Aoi.

Aoi.

I'll really quickly talk about her. She also has butterflies on her kimono, and I think the femininity aspect of it is interesting, even if only because she's Natsume's sister, so as to further cement her as different from him. I think the transformation/cycle theme is important here for Aoi, since this day is one of heavy change and discovery. She goes from being trapped in a cage, blind and with no memory, to meeting many new people and recovering her memories of her brother.

Additionally, she can also be like a "guide to the afterlife" for Natsume, since she, even more than Nobara, was the reason he went down into the dungeon to be trapped in the first place. Ultimately, she is the butterfly he's chasing.

Youichi.

God. I'm a little hesitant about his. It's hard to get a close look at his design. Those round objects are a bit unfamiliar to me, but after doing a bit of research, they could be fans, except that I don't see handles. They could also be game boxes, or shell-matching game baskets, which are a common motif on children's kimonos. That makes sense, because Youichi is a child. I can't find a lot of sources on that motif, though, so it seems off to me. The flower looks kinda like it could be cherry blossom. In any case, I think the round box objects being games appeals to me because it emphasizes how young Youichi is, despite the responsibilities he carries in the DA class and in this arc in particular when he takes up the mantel of protecting Mikan and the others. For that reason, it would make sense if the flowers were cherry blossoms (most characters discussed here wear cherry blossoms). His is hard to discern for me, so I'm mostly bringing him up as a question.

Mikan

Which brings us to Mikan's! Obviously, she has sakura blossoms, which is no surprise! Sakura are a quintessential Japanese icon, it's Mikan's surname, and additionally has plenty of symbolism.

To start with, it has connotations of softness and kindness. More than that, however, because its blooming period is so short (one might think of the significance of Mikan's alice shape...), it has come to symbolize the fleeting nature of beauty but also of life, but also the acceptance of that transience. For Mikan, especially, those themes are pretty important in this arc!

Mikan has more than a brush with death in this arc--she is on the brink of death and brought back mysteriously at the last moment. She is only eleven, so there's no better way to punctuate the fleetingness of life than with the proposed death of a child, but considering that she accepts the chance of her own death, the sakura seems like a fitting flower on her kimono.

Ruka and Hotaru

They are both wearing cherry blossoms! I assumed while skimming that maybe that was what everyone at the party was wearing since the kimonos were provided by the MSP, but that's not true at all. The ones wearing cherry blossoms are part of Mikan's group invited to the party. But Ruka and Hotaru's cherry blossoms look more like each other's than like Mikan's. Whereas Mikan's are a bit abstract, theirs are lined and come with leaves and, in Ruka's case, branches.

Hotaru is certainly wearing a cherry blossom design but I also see a few differently shaped flowers that could be tiny chrysanthemums or morning glories? But I am not qualified to make that call. I do see cherry blossoms, though, which tracks.

Hotaru is Mikan's biggest supporter in this arc, so I assume she's wearing sakura for that reason. You couldn't convince me Hotaru's fate at the end of the manga was planned, so I refuse to consider that. Instead, I'm drawn to how popular sakura-viewing is in Japan, and how Hotaru's entrance to the party instantly makes her the subject of attention, particularly from the MSP. Her presence at the party--and by extension all the flower princesses--are objects for the MSP to gape at.

Then we have Ruka, who is also a big supporter in this arc, of both Mikan and especially Natsume, which is important since he usually feels like a burden. I feel like it has to mean something that his cherry blossoms have branches unlike the others, but I didn't find anything online. I can't help but feel like his role in this arc is as a branch since he shares Natsume's backstory, he stands up for both Mikan and Natsume, and he proves his own mettle. He is a connector, provides strength and stability, and keeps everyone together.

Natsume.

On to the flower that caught my eye to begin with. Natsume's kimono has both sakura and chrysanthemum. Sakura, because of his association with Mikan and the rest of the group. Chrysanthemum is symbolic of Japan too, just like the sakura, and it represents nobility and purity. If that was that, I would leave it be, but chrysanthemum can also mean something else outside of Japanese flower symbolism and I am very familiar with that aspect of them.

In Europe, chrysanthemums are a symbol of death, and aren't a far-fetched idea to gift at a funeral. I saw one source that claimed that they're used in Japanese funerals as well. I do not think that's a coincidence.

The fleetingness of life represented by the sakura combined with the deathly connotations of a chrysanthemum is kinda as if Natsume was targeted. Considering this whole party was a trap for Natsume, that's not a stretch. Natsume was supposed to attend the party chasing a butterfly (Aoi), and then wind up in a trap where he would inevitably have to spend the rest of his life in a dungeon, to exist only as a child soldier for Persona. Considering the extra toll that would put on his body, it's safe to say it wouldn't take very long for him to die, so he is essentially being tricked into his own death here.

And that about wraps up my thoughts on that!

To conclude, I reiterate that I am not an expert in anything that I discussed today. This just caught my eye and I wanted to bring it up to see if anybody else has anything to say on the matter. I think it's really interesting that the whole group invited to the party was branded with the sakura flower, and I don't think the flower meanings were insignificant.

This was really fun to do and researching the bare amount I did for this post actually led me to learn a lot about kimono patterns and motifs, as well as flower symbolism. I like doing this kind of post and I'll probably try to do more in a similar vein, like discussing the flower symbology from the Sports Fest Arc, which I touched on with Mikan during her essay.

Natsume is a Leftie

I am BACK with another important research post.

At the end of the day, I am a scholar and an academic and I must go out of my way to closely research and study in my field (Natsume). Today it is time, after gathering my evidence, to establish my thesis on Natsume being a leftie.

(I gathered evidence in the background of gathering evidence for ANOTHER post about Natsume being a cat, so this isn't exhaustive, just strongly suggestive. Except that I'm right. So.)

Alright we'll start with a caveat! Higuchi Tachibana is a human being and makes many mistakes while drawing (draws buttons on wrong side sometimes, drew Natsume wearing the elementary uniform when he was supposed to be wearing the middle school uniform, drew Ruka in the girl uniform, etc.) so there ARE times when Natsume is using his right hand to do things he should be using his left hand for OR that other characters who are usually right-handed are seen using their left hand.

Take this image, simultaneously an example of Natsume being a leftie but also depicting Ruka, who (as far as I can tell from other evidence) is right-handed, as left-handed too. There are inconsistencies! But I am basing this off of the overwhelming amount of evidence the manga provides.

And! While I did focus on Natsume's handedness for this post, I did periodically check other characters' eating and writing and alice use (if applicable, since not everyone's alice works like Natsume) and the above image of Ruka feels like an exception rather than a rule. Most people are righthanded and most of the characters seem righthanded.

Mikan is a rightie and Chapter 27 is full of her writing with her right hand. You can see her eating with her right hand in other chapters and primarily using her right hand in other scenes throughout the manga.

We see most characters here eating with their right hands with the exception of Natsume and Mikan, who have their hands down and aren't eating. Hotaru handles weaponry primarily with her right hand and eats with her right hand. She also uses wrenches and other tools with her right hand. Koko and Iinchou and Permy all seem like righties from what I can tell.

Dainty Ruka-pyon uses his right hand to eat! It's kinda hard to track with him, honestly. There's not a lot of instances of him writing or eating, so who's to say. He might very well be right-handed as evidenced by this evidence with his fork (and there's another one on the same page) or maybe he's left-handed as evidenced by the above writing picture with Natsume. He's usually holding an animal (typically Usagi), so it's hard to tell sometimes if he's using a certain hand because it's his dominant or because it's the hand that's not busy holding an animal. Maybe he's ambidextrous! Who knows!

Anyway! About Natsume...

Let's begin with what exactly handedness is. Wikipedia says it's "an individual's preferential use of one hand, known as the dominant hand, due to it being stronger, faster or more dextrous" with the other hand usually being less so. Thus, for complex actions that require precision and control will be carried out with the dominant hand. You'll defer to your dominant side most times and it tends to be subconscious. So for both absent movements and precision-requiring movements, you will probably default to your dominant hand. Our muscle memory and precision is usually significantly more developed in our dominant hand. Handedness is usually determined by observing the hand people use to write or eat with. This post will also feature heavily that Natsume predominantly uses his left hand to use his alice.

10% of the population is left-handed and most of society was built to cater to right-handed individuals. In Japan in particular, children are sometimes still forced to write with their right hand because of the way writing kanji works. Previously, throughout history, people have assumed that left-handedness was a sign of the devil. People have also historically correlated left-handedness with mental illness and have encouraged forcing leftie children to use their right hand (though this practice often resulted in children having self-esteem issues and speech impediments, which probably means the lefties have higher rates of mental illness because of how they've been treated rather than some innate issue).

Thus pages like this, where he's using his right hand to use the water fountain, are because they are designed for right-handed people, thus are not evidence that he's not left-handed, if that makes sense.

Alright here's the evidence for him being a leftie!

This is my most consistent evidence. Most people with alices don't have a manifested thing to keep in their hands like Natsume does to showcase this, really, so he's kinda unique in this way, but most of the time that I've been able to notice, he's primarily using his left hand to summon his fire. This is pretty consistent until we get to later chapters when his battles are much grander and he summons much larger flames that surround him rather than manifesting in one hand or the other.

I mean. This is pretty solid evidence that he's a leftie. Medusa here points out that he's specifically targeted Natsume's left hand because he caught on to the fact that Natsume has been using that hand to use his alice for most of the battle. He can use his right hand, as we see in other moments, and even on the next page of this scene, but I think his left hand is his dominant hand and thus the one he feels most comfortable using.

He even uses his left hand to make an alice stone! If you were crafting something with love and care, you'd probably use your dominant hand, right? (Or, rather... left.... hehe :P)

Honestly if this was a couple one-off times regarding his alice use, I wouldn't make anything of it, but it's so consistent, it must mean something.

But! I have more evidence than just alice use, although I think that's pretty significant.

We'll start with my weaker and more desperate evidence...

He tends to reach out with the left hand. I've noticed a slight tendency for him to turn on his left side (like in the above example with the water fountain as well as this scene with Ruka), or to lean on the left side, which is not necessarily proof but just padding for my study.

The center image in particular seems so telling to me. After the ground closes up, Natsume instantly collects himself and even seems embarrassed by how much emotion he showed, which signals that this moment was knee-jerk fear to help Mikan. He reaches out with his left hand because it's the familiar hand and it's an instinctive move.

This is the same reasoning as above. Natsume grabs this kid and gets him out of the way of danger and thus his left hand is stuck to the kid for an hour, so we consistently see him with his left hand out of commission. I think, because this was a knee-jerk and instinctive move, he reached out with the left hand again to save the kid from being crushed.

These are stretches, but humor me! The shape of the fingers suggests that's his left hand, and I either hold a book with two hands or with my dominant. It feels a little weird to hold it with my non-dominant. The next one is him feeding the animals with his left hand despite the animals being on his right. Subconsciously, people move to favor their dominant side to make things easier.

Alright, on to stronger stuff. According to the internet, what hand you use to write is pretty indicative of your handedness. We have the image with Ruka above, where we can see him writing with his left hand.

This scene is very important to me! Technically, Natsume does end up writing the answer on the chalkboard with fire using his right pointer finger, but that's because he'd already picked up the chalk with his left to write with and only drops it when he's moving past the area. He's a lazy boy too, so...

Using violence, LMAO. He hits with his left hand and... I don't know if y'all have ever thrown a punch or slapped someone, but... I mean, in my experience you prefer your dominant hand.

For such precision-oriented actions as these examples above, you'd likely use your left-hand. He does use his right hand in Chapter 9 playing dodgeball (but it's the one time he's shown actively throwing it, so IDK. Could be a fluke or a mistake.), but I'm inclined to ignore that. I don't really toss things with my non-dominant hand the way Natsume does with the cockroach, so that's probably the hand he's more comfortable with. The second image is him after he threw a ball at Tono's head, and, for max aim ability, one would use their dominant hand for that. The last one.... First, he's so cool. I've never been able to do that, dominant hand or no (I'm bad at sports), but it was always a bit easier on my right hand (dominant) than otherwise, so I think that's proof too.

Moving on...

People use their dominant hand to use eating utensils, as we saw above with other characters. These are multiple examples from across the manga where Natsume uses his left hand to use a fork or chopsticks. I will concede that in the last image where Natsume is eating a New Year's meal with chopsticks, many other characters are using their left hands despite me knowing they're right-handed, namely Hotaru. That being said, the other evidence here makes me think Natsume's left-handedness is intentional.

And here it is, my biggest proof:

(Ruka is a rightie here, and no animal in sight, so maybe this is his natural way of being... Then again, he could always be ambidextrous, like I said, though that is exceptionally rare. Then again, Ruka is exceptional, so <3)

Here, Higuchi Tachibana would have had to go out of her way to draw Natsume eating with a different hand than Aoi or Ruka. This evidence to me is SO LOUD. Not only does this further cement that Natsume is a leftie and not all other characters are, but also that it's not an accident or even a headcanon. This is proof that it was intentional on Higuchi Tachibana's part to draw him left-handed! I've always been obsessed with this page, so I was bound to catch this eventually. Yet another reason to love this panel lol.

I have stuff I couldn't fit in here because even with a 30 image limit I am tempted to go overboard, but this should be sufficient. Natsume is a leftie!

Did y'all know lefties tend to excel more in sports? They also tend to be better fighters (as we can see in the violence examples above) because they move from an unexpected side. The fact that the world is designed to favor right-handedness means lefties have an unforeseen advantage in sports and fighting because they move from a side righties don't anticipate as naturally.

But many tools, computer equipment, and even instruments are designed for easier right-handed use, which can be inconvenient or even dangerous for lefties. Thus, I didn't know how a sax would work regarding handedness (and also Natsume sucks at playing it anyway) which is why I didn't even really check out those chapters.

Anyway, handedness doesn't really affect many things in a meaningful way despite some propaganda or vague correlations saying otherwise and lefties face an often-overlooked series of disadvantages, which is why I think Natsume being a leftie is interesting, because his life is hard enough already. Oh well.

Anyway, I hope y'all enjoyed reading this rambling! Natsume being left-handed is something I will not let go of. I will DIE on this hill, especially because it's pretty clearly intentional.

Natsume Is a Cat (pt. 3)

If anyone is looking at this nonsense... thanks. Isn't the world golden on our side of things? Let's get back to it, to our academic and scholarly research!

Where were we? Onto cats likes and dislikes?

Cats don't much like water. They don't care for swimming and avoid it when possible (that doesn't mean they're dirty though; cats are very good at self-grooming).

Water bugs them, after all.

But the dark doesn't! Cats have a tapetum lucidum in their eyes which lets them see in the dark, so there's nothing to fear even in total darkness.

They tend to underestimate their weight and enjoy sitting on chests if they so choose, even if the person they're sitting on doesn't like it as much.

I had to include this because my cat Phoebe does this to me every night.

But they don't really like going places. They would prefer to do nothing.

You can try to make them, but they revert back to inaction. Always.

Natsume does nothing all the time. It's his favorite thing to do.

Cats also typically dislike when they're introduced to a new cat in their home. Especially at first, they might be cruel to the new cat, but in time, they might get attached.

Cats do this often. They look at you, spot your interest, and then run, for the sole purpose of making you chase them. They do this on purpose. They like the chase. They will stop and let you pet them eventually but they need to play the game first. I'm not making this up. This is true.

And to wrap things up, I will conclude with pages I had in my folder with unclear captions that I saved too long ago and now no longer remember where I was going with them.

Titled, "catlike". I agree, but I can't explain it.

Titled, "gives cat vibes." Don't know what that's supposed to mean. He does look like a black cat here though.

Titled, "hes a cat i can tell". Very unhelpful to me. I guess it's just a vibe?

"hes a cat what do u want me to say" Well, past!Anya, I want you to say specifically where you were going with this. But I'll bite. He does seem like a cat here.

"omg just like a cat". Have no idea if this is about what Aoi is saying (misunderstood and thought of as scary, like a cat) or Natsume in the background doing fuck all. Maybe both. Either way, I agree.

And to finally finish off, let's discuss the fact that the person he gets along best with is Ruka, who has the animal pheromone alice. Unlike literally every other person on the planet, Natsume has never been angry at Ruka. He loves Ruka. He always loved Ruka. Natsume is a cat.

(This is clearly a joke. Natsume is not nice to Ruka because he's under the affect of animal pheromones. Because Natsume is a human being. But it's a funny joke. Their friendship is very clearly authentic and beautiful. Natsume is kind to Ruka because Ruka is perfect and has never done anything wrong ever, in his life.)

BONUS

Not related to cat stuff, but this one was funny:

Natsume Is a Cat (pt. 2)

Hello again. Let's get straight back into this nonsensical rambling about our beloved Natsume, who is a cat in a person's body. Please believe me when I say I have researched this thoroughly and am more than prepared to cite my evidence and show my work.

We left off with the point that cats like to climb trees to be tall and will come down when they feel like it. Maybe for food.

He only came down from his tree for some cake and had no intention of staying until Ruka roped him into dancing with Mikan. After that fiasco, where did he go? That's right--right back to the tree.

Cats don't just climb trees, they climb everything so they can be tall. This is why it's important to get them a cat tree or something they can climb because otherwise they'll climb your shelves. They also always land on their feet, so jumping is no problem.

He's never even a bit scared to hop down. He knows he'll land on his feet. (This is not normal human behavior, as seen by people's reactions to his impressive jumps.)

It's not just a lack of fear about heights; it's a NEED to be high.

He also crawls about, like a rascal.

All this crawling about leads to interesting discoveries from time to time. After all, curiosity killed the cat, and what is Natsume if not a dead boy walking?

Warn him all you like, but he will stick his nose in things no matter how dangerous it is. That's just how cats are.

They're notoriously difficult to train because they don't always like to cooperate.

But let's not linger on sad things! What else do cats like?

They often prefer flowing water to a water bowl, so it's sometimes recommended to get them a fountain.

They also love to play. Hanging objects are always fair game.

And they like to sleep, as previously established!

So very cute and innocent-looking when they sleep! It's easy to be fooled into complacency then, to think it will last forever...

But they're actually light sleepers. Move even a bit and the cat will wake up in no time.

They are capable of being horrid, too. Rascals.

Sadly, sometimes the negative is all people focus on. As a result, cats are demonized, thought of as evil, vilified. They are not evil, though. They're still just little babies.

People even make stuff up about them!

So it makes sense when cats become wary of humans, considering the way they are sometimes treated. But feral cats tend to have close bonds with other cats.

Perhaps with a kitten?

And cats tend to look like cats, which you might have noticed.

Natsume Is a Cat (pt. 1)

Hi guys. This was a long time coming. I've kinda always planned on making a post like this, for fun. It's not exhaustive, and it's not intelligent, but these are some musing about Natsume being a cat. Maybe I'll find new examples and add them, but for now, this is what I've come up with. Enjoy.

Now, Natsume being a cat is not connected to him being the Black Cat and wearing the cat mask. That's incidental. We'll discuss it anyway. Natsume is the Black Cat because of plot and relationship reasons. Mikan is told in Chapter 2 to "Beware of black cats," specifically in relation to Natsume and his mask. Black cats are bad luck. Natsume is bad luck. I think Higuchi Tachibana chose the mask because his personality was already catlike and the mask just cemented it in a visual form. The superstition adds fun and spice to the NM relationship.

But I won't be bringing up examples of his mask as proof that he's a cat because, in my opinion, that's weak evidence. Instead, we'll go into detail about what exactly makes someone a cat person vs. any other kind of person and why Natsume is a cat person, or more accurately, a person who is a cat.

Typically, the term "cat person" or "dog person" refers to which animal a person prefers to keep as a pet. Though Natsume clearly likes all kinds of animals (he's best friends with Ruka, and this will come up again), I think a cat would make the best pet for him because of his personality and what exactly cats require of their owners as opposed to dogs or other animals. Surprisingly, cat or dog people have actually been shown time and time again to have certain traits associated with them. For cat people, they tend to be as follows: neurotic, creative, open-minded, introverted, sensitive, non-conformist, and intelligent. I won't get into all that here, because I'm actually not trying to prove that Natsume is a cat person; rather, I'm making the point that Natsume is a cat who just so happens to be a person. I hope that makes sense.

Essentially, this post will be a claim that Natsume is a cat, particularly a feral cat, particularly a stereotypical feral cat. Cats have different personalities, and sometimes act opposite the way I'll be describing here. I have three cats who all have different personalities so I know that there's no one-size-fits-all traits to be ascribed to an entire species. This is a post for fun.

(Special note: cats are innocent creatures and thus should never be subject to violence or cruelty the way they so often are, especially black cats being viewed as bad luck, or by neighbors leaving out catfood soaked in antifreeze because they're bothered by a neighborhood cat. Cats are victim to a lot of violence, which is why it's often recommended you keep your cat indoors to help prevent them from being hurt or killed, either by accident or on purpose. Unlike dogs, cats as an entire species have always been negatively depicted throughout history and those superstitions still persist today. Also if you hate cats, I don't trust you. I don't think we can be friends.)

Let's begin.

What's a feral cat?

A feral cat is a cat that has not been socialized and is thus not accustomed to interacting with humans. I would actually argue that Natsume as he is in the manga is more of a stray cat that has become feral over time. That particular definition would be a cat that was once socialized, or perhaps had an owner, but was abandoned somehow until it lost trust in humans. These cats have the potential to be resocialized, but only if someone is willing to be patient and work with them. So. Natsume.

Did you know that cats only meow to communicate with humans? They do not meow with each other. Thus, a feral cat that is not accustomed to interacting with humans is not likely to vocalize much. Why do I bring this up?

Natsume doesn't talk much.

Natsume's most common speech bubble is as seen above. "....." He doesn't talk, doesn't feel the need to communicate, doesn't have much to say at all. I have indoor cats, who are all vocal when they're trying to talk to me, but most of the time they're quiet. Even unferal cats tend to keep quiet.

These instances are great examples of that, where people are talking to him, maybe asking questions even, and he doesn't say anything. In the second example, the most he says is, "what." In the first, all he does is glare. Cat-core.

Feral cats don't really trust people. They can be aggressive towards those they perceive as threats. Living on the streets can make you wary of any potential dangers.

Have you ever tried to approach a cat, only to get scratched? It's because they're scared! (Yes, I do think Natsume is scared here and that's why he reacts like this; he is also wary and even--dare I say--scared of Nobara, who is timid and means well, just because he thinks of her as Persona's tool. A girl may look helpless and innocent, but at the Academy, anybody could be a spy or a threat meant to cow him into obedience.)

Even further--they don't appreciate being hugged without their consent. (This is actually a reason why people hate cats. Can you believe?? The absolute stupidity of cat haters. Cats have boundaries and aren't afraid to stand by them. If you pull a cat's tail or try to hug it when it doesn't wanna be held, they will scratch. This isn't a sign that cats are evil; this is a sign that you don't care much about others' boundaries.)

I'm not saying Tsubasa doesn't care about Natsume's boundaries, but he's trying too hard and isn't patient enough to act on Natsume's terms. (Also, Tsubasa is a dog person.)

Meanwhile, cats like to be the one to come to you, and to demonstrate affection on their own terms.

They actually like snuggling from time to time, but they don't like when it's forced on them.

In fact, even for people they like, cats can get irritated when affection is forced upon them in any way, or if it isn't entirely on their own terms.

Natsume stays put in the first example because Ruka is drunk and sleeping, but it's clear he's not happy to be trapped like that. Meanwhile, in the second example, Mikan has pet Natsume too much! Cats get unhappy when they've been overstimulated (also she called him cute and cats think they're bigger and cooler and tougher than they actually are).

Meanwhile, sometimes you give a cat affection and they don't really react at all, for various reasons.

Cats react like this to being kissed in real life actually. They can't do anything about it and they don't get it. Just O.O. That's all.

I titled this image "cats react like this to being hugged jsyk" which is usually true if the cat is used to you and permits your touch.

So how do cats show their love if they're so picky about affection? Easy! For one, they love gift-giving, particularly with food! A cat might bring you prey it's caught.

Or you might have heard that cats convey trust and affection through eye contact and slow blinking.

But cats often like to be by themselves. They don't often relish large crowds and uncomfortable stray cats will even hide themselves from humans.

Cats actually don't do very much. They like to sit around and do nothing. You know who else likes to sit around and do nothing? That's right!

He is sleepy! Cats sleep 12-16 hours a day, and my cat Phoebe sleeps way more than that. Natsume probably doesn't sleep enough at night considering his missions, but let's pretend he's just sleepier than the average person.

In particular, you'll often find a cat sitting and looking out the window. They love to watch through the window.

Such a big world out there. They don't necessarily wanna be a part of it, but they sure do like looking at it.

And they LOVE to climb! Trees are a big part of this. They love to be tall.

Trees allow for cats who are otherwise small to feel tall. They're also an excellent hiding space from dastardly humans. Cats don't so much get "stuck" in trees as their owners just desperately want them back down. The cat will likely come down when it feels like it.
