Half Acre Beer Co; Chicago, IL: Sunday in Saigon
6% ABV
Another exclusive, post-GABF week treat! Not only is Half Acre not usually distributed in Colorado, this particular style is a small-batch, experimental brew. It had a great saison nose, all fresh yeast and lemongrass. It was light and lovely drinking, with subtle hints of basil, cereal grain, and farmhouse spice. The swallow finished clean and paired strangely well with our pretzels and mustard. A lovely treat!

Bell’s Brewing; Kalamazoo, MI: Two Hearted
7% ABV
One of the lovely things about GABF week, even if one is not fortunate enough to attend, is the special access around town to beers that are not normally distributed in Colorado. When we saw Midwestern favorite Bell’s pop up on the tap list at local beer bar Jake’s, a mid-afternoon stroll in the midst of a bad cold was a no-brainer. Sick or not, I couldn’t pass up Bell’s! Nor could our neighbors, it seemed, as nearly every person in the bar was wearing Midwestern beer gear. Two Hearted was every bit the well balanced, excellent IPA I remembered. The nose was bursting with hop aroma, but the bitterness was nicely balanced out with biscuity background malt. With a creamy mouthfeel and a light hop finish, it accomplished the rare trick of being even better than I’d built it up to be.
