Minerals: Gabrielite
A rare thallium sulfosalt mineral, gabrielite’s chemical formula is usually written as either Tl6Ag3Cu6(As,Sb)9S21 or Tl2AgCu2As3S7 - containing antimony or arsenic, copper, silver, sulfur, and thallium.
First reported in the early 2000s, it was named for Walter Gabriel, a Swiss mineral photographer. Gabrielite has only been found in Switzerland.
This mineral crystalizes in the triclinic crystal system and is usually black or gray in color with a metallic luster. It is relatively soft, with a Mohs hardness of 1.5-2 and has the potential for thermoelectric properties, like other sulfosalts.
