What are the Odds?
On Sunday, the Eagles blew a 20-point 3rd quarter lead over the 49ers. Several hours later, the Phillies blew a 4th inning 4-0 lead with Cliff Lee on the mound to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Given the stage of the games and the talent-level of the opponents, the Eagles collapse was certainly the more egregious, but the Phillies loss shouldn't be shrugged off very lightly either.
Just what were the chances of these losses? According the advancednflstats.com, the Eagles had a 97% chance of winning the game in the third quarter. The Phillies, according to fangraphs.com, had a 91.4% chance of winning the game.
Now, you'd have to be a much better statistician than me to know what the odds of those two teams both gacking all over themselves, but you don't have to be Sir David Cox to know it's awfully slim.
