It is estimated that 500,000 animals were sacrificed during the Gadhimai festival of 2009.

Participants believe that animal sacrifices to the Hindu goddess Gadhimai will end evil and bring prosperity.

Following legal action, “the number of animals sacrificed in the year 2014 were estimated to have decreased by 50% […] the festival in 2019 is expected to be the first festival sans sacrifice.’ It occurs every five years.
