ST. MARY'S CHURCH, GAINFORD, CO. DURHAM. NORTH EAST ENGLAND. by jacqueline (Jackie) ramsey Via Flickr: St Mary's Church, Gainford, Co. Durham , stands on the site of an Anglo-Saxon monastery, built by Bishop Ecgred of Lindisfarne in the early 9th century. Gainford on Tees is a village on the North bank of the River Tees, Co. Durham. Legend has it that the residents on both sides of the river disputed over the ownership of a ford across the Tees. After a battle , residents of the Durham side of the river gained the ford and their village became known as GAIN FORD. On the Yorkshire side of the river, the lies the deserted village of BARFORTH or Bar ford. Said to named in memory of it's residents' attempt to barricade the ford during the dispute.
