ST. MARY'S CHURCH, GAINFORD, CO. DURHAM. NORTH EAST ENGLAND. by jacqueline (Jackie) ramsey Via Flickr: St Mary's Church, Gainford, Co. Durham , stands on the site of an Anglo-Saxon monastery, built by Bishop Ecgred of Lindisfarne in the early 9th century. Gainford on Tees is a village on the North bank of the River Tees, Co. Durham. Legend has it that the residents on both sides of the river disputed over the ownership of a ford across the Tees. After a battle , residents of the Durham side of the river gained the ford and their village became known as GAIN FORD. On the Yorkshire side of the river, the lies the deserted village of BARFORTH or Bar ford. Said to named in memory of it's residents' attempt to barricade the ford during the dispute.

“Shooting Affray Is Reported From Gainsford,” Edmonton Bulletin. September 3, 1919. Page 03. --- A report of attempted murder at Gainsford, west of Edmonton, has been made to the city police, the information laid being to the effect that a man whose name is not stated was shot at by an unknown assailant on Monday. Details in connection with the affair as received in Edmonton are very meagre but Chief Hill, of the Edmonton city police, has taken the case in hand, especially in view of the possibility of a connection with the recent killing of Constable Nixon.

Digging through some old files I came across these two pictures that I took a few years ago in the Monk’s Dormitory in Durham Cathedral.

The stone on the right is a cross shaft depicting two beasts. The cross shaft on the right depicts two figures in knee-length tunics.

The collection of Anglo Saxon and Viking stones collected from across the North of England is stunning. Sadly photography by members of the public of the stones is not allowed as ‘Many of the objects are fragile and can be damaged by photography’.

The cathedral was used as a location for the recent Avengers Infinity wars film and has also been used as a location for two Harry Potter films.

The collection is now part of the Open Treasure Exhibition tickets cost £7.50 for adults, Students, Unwaged £6 and £2.50 for children. Family ticket £17.50
