You got the news through the phone that you were pregnant from the labs.
It was raining, and over the course of a few days, it had yet to show signs of stopping. It gave you plenty of time to plan, because your husband was busy being a pro hero.
You loved the rain. Because it reminded you of him. It reminded you of the light shower that you two first met in. It reminded you of the rainy days you and he met occasionally at that one coffee shop that provided you shelter from the wet weather, and him a nice break from work. It reminded you of the time when, after the rain had ceased and you both were about to part ways, he'd asked you out. It reminded you of yours and his nth date, movie night, of a sudden downpour, when he first kissed you after a soft lovers' playfight through the parking lot in a rush to get to his vehicle. His bulky frame towering over yours. And how it felt like an eternity until you both pulled apart. That grin of his.
Tonight, he was home. He was currently in the shower, allowing you to prepare what you had planned. Every note was in place; a little game you made up for him to get his surprise, locked in a small box that you had custom-made behind a code. The date you and him started going out. When you hear the shower turn off, you call out to him. "Hey, babe?" you ask. 'Yeah?' comes his reply from within. "I've kinda been planning something important for a few days, now." you say. You hear a small thump from within the bathroom, and you snicker to yourself before continuing. "And today's the day I wanna--" "I'm not missing something, am I?" you're interrupted by your worried husband who'd made a hasty exit, wearing his bathrobe. The look on his face makes you laugh.
"No--no, you're not." you laugh. The next face he makes has you laughing even harder. After several moments, he just shrugs his shoulders, before turning to head to the back of the place, wearing a very confused expression. "Surprise!" you wheeze, "It's s'posed t'be a surprise, babe." you tell him, and he steps back, leaning around the corner with a raised brow. "Here, here," you beckon him. "You need to play a game first." you tell him. When he approaches, you point to your lips and pucker them. He snorts, a bit confused, but amused, a small smile playing on his lips. He bends to plant a kiss on yours. You smile, then point to your unbuttoned sweater's pocket. He just stares. You giggle. "There's something in there. Take it out." you tell him. His mouth forms into a soundless 'Oh.' and he does as you instruct.
He unfolds the note, reading the sentence.
'Take off my sweater.'
"Alright." he says, raising his hands to pull the sweater off your shoulders. Once off, he drapes it over his arm, and you outstretch your enclosed hand, turning your palm upright and opening it. You try to contain your giggles as he raises his brows, taking the small paper.
Again, he unfolds it, reading the sentence it contains.
'Turn me around.'
He then reaches for one of your shoulders, coaxing you to turn around, showing another note you had taped to your shirt.
He takes it with a curious hum, reading it.
'Turn me back around, then turn this note around and read the back.'
"Okay..." he says, turning you back around. Slowly, he turns to paper, looking at you quizzically. You nod towards the paper, smiling widely at him.
His gaze lingers on you before lowering to the paper.
'Kiss my forehead.'
He chuckles softly, before bending to plant a kiss on your forehead. When he pulls away, you lift your shirt a bit to a note you'd taped to your tummy that read 'POKE HERE' with arrows on either side that pointed to a circle below.
Again, he does as instructed, giving you a gentle poke with a confused expression, and you giggle. "Last note. Promise." you say to him, outstretching your other enclosed hand, turning it palm up, and opening it to give him the final note. He takes it, unfolding it and reading it. While he does, you prance off to procure the box.
'This is going to be a very important hint to open your surprise: What day, month, and year marks a very important occasion in our relationship?'
He hums thoughtfully, raising a hand to rub at his chin as he stares at the note. You return in from of him, his gaze lifting to you, then the box as you offer it to him. Apprehensively, he takes the box and peruses it to find it locked behind numbers. He thumbs the numbers with a thoughtful frown as you come to his side.
He scrolls through the numbers, entering the date of your wedding. The box does not open. You can't help but smile. Next up is the day he proposed to you. The box still remains locked, and he becomes stumped, entering important date after important date in an attempt to open it, to no avail. Eventually, you can't help but laugh at him. "When did we first kiss, you big oaf?" you tease him. "Ooooh." he hums, closing his eyes and tapping the box thoughtfully.
"If I remember...?" he mutters under his breath after a few moments, entering the correct date. You begin to feel giddy as the box clicks and pops open. Slowly, he opens it, to find a baby bib you'd made yourself while he was away. His eyes widen at your embroidery that read 'FOR OUR BABY' in big, colorful letters.
He just stares, wide-eyed, for several moments. "Baby?" you call to him. An incredulous sound escapes him, his voice failing him; he can only point at the bib, jaw slack, wearing a look of disbelief mixed with excitement. You giggle at him. "I'm pregnant." you tell him, and for several more moments, he just gapes like a goldfish. He sniffs, eyes wet as his jaw snaps shut, and you quickly find yourself in his arms, papers and sweater crumbling to the floor. You feel yourself tear up, too, wrapping your arms around him as he just hugs you tight, and for the longest time, you stay in each others' embrace.
