The power of shadow, a silent meaning. On the eve of my birthday I had a dream about the pitbull (correction, not the bulldog, )being my spirit animal. I envisioned a PapelPicado piece where I would be standing next to two pit bulls claiming me as their own. Perhaps, healing will take longer than I thought, but now, I can’t help thinking that everything does happen for a reason. There is a Mexican proverb that says, ‘hay veces que aprendemos a puros chingasos’ ‘ sometimes we learn from a beating” meaning, even though life teaches you lessons some of us are so stubborn that only a beating will do. As violent as my dog attack was, I have learned to forgive the dog and embrace his own suffering. Through this experience I sought out the empowerment of my grandmothers and my great aunts who were Adelitas. Through this experience, my upcoming solo exhibition is titled: Feminine Bloodlines, Mexican Womanhood: Erasing Submissiveness This piece will be part of my solo exhibition at the Arts Council of Indianapolis gallery 924 and I will be speaking more about this experience being the catalyst of my solo in my artist talk.
