the galloper's tale in sso is funny because it's an antipode of the Dangerous wild horse that no one can tame becomes friend with one girl trope. instead it's This man has rancid vibes and no horse likes him except one mare that becomes his best friend
A soul shard
Anyway I still see confusion and people not understanding/having seen all of his story so here’s Gunnar Thyrmson from start to finish ig
Left Scandinavia early in his life to go with the jarl and discover new lands. (Comic) he was seemingly a teen when they left. (In-game) no info about his age exists, so it can be assumed that it’s the same as in the comic. He was on jorvik for decades and towards the end of his life was still described as young.
Gained renown in battle when their ship was nearly taken by pirates, being such a prominent fighter that Jon Jarl made him his right hand man.
Arrived in Fort Pinta, assumed wrongly that the land was uninhabited. Gunnar would here experience bullying, isolation, and hatred for decades to come, with his only solace for a good chunk of it being Jon, who treated him well so long as Gunnar followed orders.
Discovered runestones, the Jarl ordered the destruction of these stones despite gunnar seemingly questioning this decision. One man is accidentally killed during this, and the rest of the men see it as an ill omen and flee, but Gunnar hesitantly destroys it. He’s certain this will lead to misfortune and curses the Jarl for his orders, solidifying that despite following orders, he believes this action to be wrong. It is, however, believed by the jarl’s men that these stones belong to earlier settlers who are no longer around, as they are overgrown and not tended to according to one of the ghosts in his keep.
(In game) The splitting maul is created at the Jarl’s request, and Gunnar loses piece after piece of himself destroying runestone after runestone. (Comic) After destroying the one runestone, Gunnar returns home to find that Jon Jarl has made friends with the people of the land, and he is ordered to stop his quest.
After destroying (comic) one (in game) multiple runestones, Sive makes herself known to Gunnar and rewards his destruction with a gift. (Comic) Gunnar doesn’t have the chance to say anything before she disappears.
(In game) over the course of the years, Gunnar continues to destroy his own soul until the Jarl finally makes a deal with the druids. (Comic) Gunnar spends decades helping the Jarl build Fort Pinta and Jarlaheim, still relentlessly bullied.
The druids declare Gunnar as unclean, and not touched by Aideen’s light, further isolating him away from the rest of his people. The only one who relies on him is the Jarl, though (comic) Gunnar gets no socialization from him anymore.
Horses are scared and run from him, until one day, he meets Morrigan. She becomes his only friend, and they ride together. The druids try to take Morrigan from him, worried about her not being blessed with Aideen’s light, but he fights them off.
An uprising takes place, a rebellion consisting of people who want to colonize jorvik further and are angry at the Jarl for bowing to druids and defending their faith. Despite their treatment of him, Gunnar fights to protect the druids and his Jarl, even if Jon does not defend them himself.
Despite being a hero and savior of both the jarls people and the druids, Gunnar earns only more scorn and fear. It’s said he took a blade that should have killed him. The Jarl is furious and demands Gunnar tell him how he achieved immortality.
Gunnar explains how he was cursed by a witch, and Jon orders Gunnar to go and find her, so that he too can gain immortality. Gunnar searches for quite a while before finding her, relaying the message. Sive tells him if the Jarl breaks his own runestone, he too will be immortal. (Comic) Jon tries this, (in-game) Jon orders Magnus steinar to do it for him, but it garners no results, and all that happens is that it drives the horses of jorvik stables mad.
Jon blames Gunnar for what happens, assuming that he lied and wants to keep the secret to himself, and uses his peoples hatred of Gunnar to get rid of him for good. Morrigan is burned in her stable and Gunnar is executed, but his body immediately begins to rise, even without his head.
(Comic) we do not know why Gunnar’s soul ended up in pieces, nor how it ended up in Broderick possession. (In-game) Gunnar’s soul is in pieces from cleaving so many runestones and they scatter around, one piece stolen by Broderick who considers Gunnar a monster that must be punished for all of eternity.
Angry, Gunnar spends his days hunting the Jarl’s men along the roads of Jarlaheim.
As luck would have it, Jon Jarl gains immortality by Aideen not letting him pass into the afterlife and keeping him as a ghost. Kinda based girlypop, monkey paw that asshole.
dod3 redraw but this fucking guy
neow. i am not saying the conclusion should've been "Broderick gets tortured for life in the afterlife by Galloper" i'm just saying... he didn't have to forgive anyone. the conclusion could've been "you hurt me, and i don't forgive you. but i am above revenge, so i let you go. you are not forgiven. and therefore i remove you from my life"
and i still need a Jon Jarl gets clocked by Galloper arc
— doodle cause he's never truly off my mind 🎃
