Today at church, the preacher said: "When you pray, remember that yes is an answer, wait is an answer, and no is also an answer." He shared stories of how in hindsight, he now sees how some of the things he prayed for in the past could have destroyed him, if he'd gotten them. I've had, and still continue to enjoy the privilege of getting paid to do work that matters to me. I have the privilege of turning down work others will die for. Sometimes, the work that matters to me is in an unsafe, forgotten, hard to access corner of the world. I've come back sick, tired, broken and discouraged many times. In spite of the challenges however, I never forget that this job, this life, is exactly what I prayed for. The thorns come with the roses. Thunder comes with the rain. Death is the shadow of every birth. Night is the other side of day. We spend so much praying to God to make us light, only to complain when the darkness falls. How do we find fulfillment and significance, when we forget that it is the shadows that define the light? What do you hate now, that was once what you prayed for?
