Gyroids: Ghosts of the dead
Just found this on forum about Gyroids:
They're based on Haniwa, clay figurines that the ancient Japanese would bury with their dead. When it rains, the rain water pushes the bodies of your town's deceased villagers closer to the surface, putting these artifacts of the dead in digging range. They've absorbed the spirits of those whom they were buried with, however, but these spirits cannot make full use of their new bodies. As such, all they can do is twitch and shriek, desperately trying to cry out to be put to rest. ... they're just for looks.
I think scarred is the right word here.
