Blog Post 4: Maze Runner Inspiration Strikes
It’s amazing how sometimes the best ideas come unexpectedly. Walking home from the library, Joel and I spotted a poster for "The Maze Runner." The towering walls and desperate urgency of escape it depicted struck a chord immediately.
Joel proposed adapting a similar concept: a vast, ancient maze where players are relentlessly pursued by alien enemies. Instead of combat-heavy mechanics, the focus would shift to exploration, puzzle-solving, and survival. Players would need to locate hidden elemental stones to progress through themed sections and ultimately escape the maze.
The brilliance of this idea was its simplicity. It aligned perfectly with VR’s strengths: scale, tension, spatial awareness, and environmental storytelling. Moreover, it was achievable within the limited timeframe, focusing development on one major environment rather than several complex worlds.
Excited, we arranged an online meeting to pitch the concept to the entire team. After initial discussions and refinements, everyone agreed the Maze Escape VR concept would become the new foundation of our project.
This was a huge turning point. For the first time, everything clicked: scope, style, and gameplay were unified under a single, compelling vision.
