Our team’s new holiday
Hey Gamers!
This week was a major milestone for us. Such a milestone in website development that I’ve literally put a yearly alert into my calendar so I can plan appropriate team celebrations. Not sure exactly what we will do (always open to suggestions), but I have an entire year to come up with something epic to commemorate the day GamerDating got so busy, we crashed.
We have been weary of that day since the beginning and along the way have been paying special attention to our capacities - we hate it when a site we want is down and never wanted to do that to our users. But in one hour earlier this week, we saw over 1,000 new gamers and I will be the first to admit that we were underprepared.
If you are one of those who got an error message, let me personally apologize and assure you that we have stacked our servers and are totally prepared for the next wave. We are growing even faster than we could ever have expected!
Thank you so much gamers! What started as a kinda crazy idea has bloomed into the focus of our lives. We get to empower gamers every day and it is some of the most fulfilling work I have ever done.
Stay awesome!

Gamers for Gamers
Hey gamers,
Do you understand how awesome you are?
In the few years that we have been making GamerDating, a lot has happened in the gaming industry. Insane amounts of growth has brought new gamers, innovation and increasing amounts of attention paid by media, mainstream culture and science. We now know definitively that video games do not rot your brain.
We have data showing that we cannot be boiled down to a horridly negative stereotype. To date a gamer is to date a quick learner, capable multitasker and avid problem solver. We generally have wider social circles and recently there have been studies showing that we are on average more creative than our non-gaming counterparts. I haven't opened a Cosmo or other "women's magazine" in a really long time but aren't all of those traits that everyone is looking for?
When partners share a love of video games, entire galaxies are open for them to explore together while they co-op life. They tend to spend more time together than non-gaming couples, are better at communicating their needs and can navigate challenges together with more ease.
When we started GamerDating, all we thought we were doing was creating a website where gamers could find another gamer. We never could have foreseen the reactions we've had. Usually, I get slight confusion accompanied by something close to, "So, like, a dating site for gamers?" To which I nod affirmatively and they almost always break into a huge smile. Most then ask how to sign up.
The surprise even gamers have shown has astounded me. Gamers have websites for everything - why not a dating site? Hilariously, the first thing many responders say is that there are no girls in gaming. Apparently, it is easier for them to believe that I'm some sort of unicorn than that there are plenty of gamers of any gender.
Underneath that at times, I fear, is a lack of self worth. That growing up being told that gaming was for nerds (and boys) and other such silliness has implanted a little naysaying nanobot in the back of some of our minds. It sits there, repeats all the shaming and gets fat off our human insecurity. These mean little buggers are not exclusive to gamers, most people I've met have one of them.
We are all looking for answers, maybe especially while looking for a partner. The metaphorical nanobot, like all issues I've seen erroneously blamed on gaming, is something a lot of us struggle with. How can we help our fellow gamers through these fights? What can we do to help prepare? How can we end the stereotype and combat it for the betterment of our people?
After hearing many gamer's stories of looking for love, we realized that we have an opportunity to empower gamers - far too many of whom think their gaming will have to be hidden from their potential partner, that there are no potential partners or that "grown ups" can't play. We want to be the place all gamers come and know they are amongst fellow awesome people.
We are here to give encouragement when you need it, advice from people who have been there and regular reminders that you, YOU, are awesome.
Life is a game, play it wit someone you love.

Looking for: Gamergirls....
For many gamers (and yes, this time I mean precisely the guys) female gamers or „gamergirls“ are the holy grail of their single-life. Everything will be marshmallow, if you’d just be able to meet that one perfect gamergirl to go out with, blow pixel kisses at and pwn the CoD-ladder together... Ah life will be great!
But don’t be mistaken – there are more gamergirls out there than just the one working down at your local Gamestop!
Good news everyone: many polls these days show that about one third of the worlds gamer population are in fact female gamers! (yay)
You might say: woah, alright – but where to meet this seem-to-be ultra-rare gamer species??
1. Regularly visit your local gamestore (and no: I don’t get paid by Gamestop & friends)
First of all, this is something I keep hearing about constantly, but there’s more truth to it than you might guess.
Think about it: after all they are GAMERgirls, so they also need their hard- & software fixes. Just open your eyes a little bit more next time you’re there. Don’t be surprised how many girls you actually see browsing gamestores these days.
The Wii-section is probably a good place to start, but in times where girls kick your ass in Halo, you can go by the PS3 and Xbox isles as well for sure...
2. Meet her ingame! (remember: gamergirls are girls who play games! )
For MMOs, games like World of Warcraft or Rift are probably best start to meet girls ingame, since there are just more girls playing those games than, lets say Eve Online or DC Heroes.
Of course it’s also possible to meet girls while playing 3D-action games, but due to the split-second gameplay it’s kind of hard to build up a meaningful conversation in front of the trashy shoutings of your buddies. Also most girls love to customize their characters more than guys do, so naturally it’s simply more easier to identify a carefully crafted character in WoW as a gamegirl than in shooter-games. The pink spartan-armor may be a hint, but that’s about it for visual clues in those kind of games.
In MMOs in particular I’d recommend to deal with any newly met player as of neutral sex. There are just too many guys online, that prefer seeing a dangling digital female behind in front of them, therefore picking a female character. So you obviously can’t go by digital gender.
The best start is probably to just begin playing with some random people until you have your ‚regulars’ to play with. Maybe you’re even in a guild at this point. Then, with some common sense and an eye for detail you’ll quickly figure out who is a girl in RL and who’s not.
Looking at the nickname is always a good starting point with many girls actually prefering cute names containing containing „miss...“ or „...kitty“. (I really think they choose such names because you really feel like a n00b getting pwned in CoD by KittyNeedsHug ;P ).
Also take a closer look at the general behaviour (is the player very social, does he/she love to help others? Does she go nuts about a new flower/puppy she discovers in Azeroth? Then you have good chances it really is a girl). Also, the players attention to looks is potential evidence: prefering a „shiny“ chest-plate over one with „+10 to awesome“? My guess would be: digital fashion victim or gamergirl ;)
After you have met a true gamergirl ingame one important tip though: be subtle. She’s probably forced to read stuff like „wanna see my long-sword tonight?“ all the time. Just treat her like a normal person. Play the game and commmunicate with her for a while (no: that doesn’t mean hours. More like days or even weeks) before you start sweet-talkin’. After all, gaming is what you and her brought to the same game/place online.
3. Social networking and gaming forums
If you aren’t one in RL then try getting a social butterfly on the internets. Be active on all the social networks that let you have a look at peoples profiles.
Gaming networks like xFire or Steam are always a good start. Oh and don’t bother trying facebook, since despite of all the gaming groups there are, people are generally not that open to messaging with someone they don’t know. After all facebook has really become a digital version of our identity and it’s kind of understandable that you don’t want to let random people on your profile.
Same situation on sites like xFire: our little Miss KittyNeedsHug might be way more open to a mail from, let’s say BearGivesHugs asking about her 1337 gaming skills ^.^
Of course next to the social networks you have your good ol’ gaming forums, where still lots and lots of people hang out and talk. Just try the one dedicated to your favorite game - become an active member and I’m sure you’ll run into some gamergirls who are searching for a girl-clans/guilds etc.
As always, don’t forget to bring your common sense to the table if you want to identify true gamergirls. Start looking at nicknames, and if available hobbies and favorite games. That’ll give you quite a good picture of who/what you’re looking at.
4. Conventions and Contests
This stuff is truly your perfect hunting ground for single gamers! Especially gaming-, comics- or roleplay-conventions offer so many opportunities to run into truly dedicated Gamergirls. The keyword here is cosplay.
So you better do it like Jack!
Seriously, just invest some work in a decent costume and it’s going to be quite easy to get to know new people and of course to talk to cosplay-girls at those conventions.
Even if you don’t feel like dressing up, game-conventions almost always offer some kind of recreational areas, where you can relax, play games and meet up with other gamers. Perfect for getting to know new people (gamergirls!).
5. Don’t look to far – they might be right in front of you!
Computer courses, Wii-partys, comic-shops; there are so many RL-opportunites to get to know girls who are into games.
Just one hint however: in those general situations, try to ask them about super popular gaming stuff first, even if you’re not really into those kinds of games. That way you can easily find out if they are into gaming without seeming „too much“ right away. Ask them if they know or are playing World of Warcraft, if they play Singstar, if they have done some wii-home-partys and so on. What I’m trying to say is: leave your CoD-achievements in the holster for now and try to find out about HER gaming experiences! ;)
6. Try not to glorify them too much
Of course: almost every heterosexual single gamer dreams of having a gamergirl as his girlfriend. But you could really miss out on a very special somebody if you limit yourself on just finding a truly dedicated gamergirl. After all, gaming is not necessarily the most important thing for a successful relationship.
In general, women are pretty open minded beings. So don’t waste too much time running after that one gamergirl of your dreams. You might miss out on the chance of your life! And this „normal“ girl might be even into gaming without knowing it. Maybe she’s just waiting for the right guy to show her!
So, GL and HF dating gamergirls!
Phil @gamed8.
Suche: Gamergirl...
Also, viel Spaß beim Daten wünscht Euch Phil von gamed8.de!
8 gaming skills that help you in your dating game
With all the skills a gamer/gamergirl might develop during his/her gaming life, you might wanna think if some of those can’t be used in the real dating-game.
Here are the first eight skills I came up with, which I think are some real good assets for your personal dating game. Please comment below and add skills that you think might translate good into dating!
1. Precision (as in accuracy in shooters, lap-times in racers and so on)
You know how to act under stress. You’re likely to remain cool when your dreamguy/girl walks into the room and have the guts to walk the walk. And if you do freak out – just remember all the ingame situations that you have mastered: soloing the enemy team as your team’s last man/woman standing in COD?
Knocking some Japanese wunderkind off of the GT5 racing ladder on Nürburgring? C’mon dating is easy-mode compared to this!
Just use some of this calmness that you inevitably needed in those situations and use it now! Stay cool and walk over to the guy/girl and start off with a smart “hey, want to meet a cool gamer?”
2. High APMs or directly related: top tier Starcraft 2 ladder ranking
Need I say more? Probably making a pile of money with gaming already and thinking about moving to Korea where the real sh*t happens?
Anyway, you got one of the best hand-eye-coordinations on the planet, an IQ of 125+? Girl/Dude, you don’t need any help – just go out to a bar – jump behind the counter and make the movie “Cocktail” look n00bish. The guys/girls will throw themselves at you! ;)
3. Highest Level (Char-Level, skill-tree, achievements)
What are most people looking for, when they enter a serious relationship? That’s right: commitment. And we gamers got loads and loads of that already. We just need to transfer some to dating/ relationships, that’s all!
Ingame, we set our goals (be it server-firsts, quickest playthrough, highest skill-points, highest K/D rate etc.) and we get there. We love gaming, we won’t let someone take it from us easily.
Put that image into a serious relationship. Gamers already know what commitment is and won’t find it hard to fight for what they want most. Isn’t that a better lover already?
4. Biggest friendlist
You know basically your whole server on WoW or even beyond? For you, there’s no problem at all in finding some buddies for a quick 8v8 in any given RTS?
You’re most probably talkative, easy-going, funny… wait a minute. That’s exactly what makes a perfect dater!
If you’re the kind of person who is a social butterfly (awww) on the internets, but gets totally shy in RL – just learn to calm down and probably train your precision-skill (see above) a bit. OR you simply organize a RL event with all the people you know online.
In the end it’s quite easy: same as people are often referring to just being yourself online, try being your online-self while being offline! ;)
5. You’re simply 1337?
You don’t know how you do it, but you just rule at any given game you lay hands on? Well then lay hands on the dating game, I say. Since chances are, you’re gonna be good at that too. Believe in yourself!
6. Reputation online
Leeroy Jenkins anyone? Okay you don’t have to have worldwide attention on youtube.
But if you’re the care-bear type of gamer, don’t let the other “oh so cool” gamers tease you by giving you this nickname. Be proud of it, since it means that you have way better chances in the dating game.
You’re social, you care about others, you like helping others – that is a serious asset in conquering your gamer/gamergirl!
7. Being Clan leader/ guild master high member
You manage an e-sports pro gaming clan? Or just your RL-friends-guild? Well in any case, you have to have some sort of management skills. You have to motivate people, bring them together, give them a common goal. Just see yourself as a virtual CEO of some sort. (don’t get too far, driving your own limo to your events tho) And as with every gaming skill, try bringing it in to the real life. Throw a party for your guild or clan and invite your dream-guy/girl.
This way you can introduce her/him even more deeply to gamers and show off (in a good way) what you have created. Or you can use your “guild-forged” management skills to organize a perfect date with your dreamguy/girl.
8. Owning all kinds of diffrerent consoles / stepping out of the fanboy-war
Not to get in too deep into the consoles-war, but there’s a reason why they call it fanboys.
So in that case, grow up and be openminded! Gaming is such a wonderful thing, I find it hard to see it only from one perspective. Try out new things! If you have the possibility try out other consoles, other ways of gaming!
Because if you’re able to do this with your favorite hobby, you’ll likely be more open-minded in other parts of your real-life as well. And guess what: that makes you even more attractive!
Bonus: Bringing your biggest passion into real life
Generally anything you're bringing to RL from gaming in a fun and creative way can be awesome and make you even more interesting! (Seriously, how cool is THAT guy? See below)
