Lombardy NGO rescues migrants from gangmasters

An NGO based in the northern Italian region of Lombardy has rescued two migrants who were exploited by gangmasters. Kali, a 23-year-old Indian man, and Irina, a 27-year-old Romanian woman, became victims of gangmasters after they migrated to Italy. They were aided by ''Lule,'' an organization in Lombardy that helps victims like them.

Until the late Sixties, such informal labor markets (known as yoseba) were also where blood banks like the one where Tadao worked went to recruit when supplies were low. They were where major corporations like Toyota scouted men to work their assembly lines, usually on grueling shifts and under dangerous conditions for terrible pay.

Corrupt day-labor markets were also where the fledgling nuclear power industry and their yakuza go-betweens went to find short-term janitorial and maintenance workers, to be shipped off to places like the Fukushima Daiichi station (already notorious as a dirty and dangerous facility in the 1970s) to wipe up radioactive spills and remove radioactive corrosion from valves and vents, so that Japan’s nuclear power plants were clean enough to pass inspection and reopen with tolerable efficiency and without too great a risk of accident.

Many writers took to calling these exploited laborers kimin — “abandoned peoples” — thereby identifying the day-labor markets, and the alliance between industrial capitalism and organized crime that governed them, as one of the major engines of dispossession in Japan.

Boston College students showcase creative talents to modern slavery experts

Boston College students taking part in a course with the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA) have showcased their work to some of the world’s leading experts on modern slavery and labour exploitation.

Students from the college presented their visual concepts for raising awareness of labour abuse at an event hosted by the University of Nottingham’s Rights Lab on Monday 21 January 2019.

The concepts included everything from videos to photography, graphic design and even clothing, all of which featured in a four-minute showreel played at the event.

They were also given an exclusive insight into the work of both the GLAA, the foremost investigative agency for tackling labour exploitation, and the Rights Lab, home to the world’s leading modern slavery experts who have developed an advanced research agenda focused on eradicating slavery by 2030.

Boston College is the first college in the UK to work with the GLAA on embedding the subject of labour abuse across its range of academic and vocational courses.

As part of the project, the college’s 1,500 full-time students will all have a tutorial on workers’ rights and spotting the signs of modern slavery during this academic year.
