My love affair with Malhaar started when I was about 10 years old, I had heard Saadhna Sargam sing Garaj Garaj aaye kaar badra. I still remember me and my mom singing that song for weeks. The song brings back memories of the Indian monsoon. The days when a care free little boy would run up to the balcony and get drenched in the rain and splash around muddy puddles with his friends. Singing in Malhaar is more than conformance to notes, beats and the raga. Malhaar is a feeling that is entrenched deep within me and my soul, a feeling that can never be erased. Hope you like my rendition of this song.

गरज गरज - गरज गरज आज मेघ घनन घनन छायो रि दमक दमक चमके बिजुरी कहत है रितुराज आयो रि! - Well, I’ve been watching a show which revolves around a tradition of Indian classical music in our modern era. This ‘bandish’ speaks about the marvel of thunderclouds, heralding the arrival of the lord of the rains. The sky outside my window today would be reflected ideally by these words, in my opinion. My interpretation: the luscious, intense thunderclouds thunder and spread across the vast sky; the beams of lightning striking the ground herald the arrival of the Rituraj, the one who controls the seasons. This interpretation doesn’t come anywhere near the beauty of the original, but it conveys the meaning, I hope. - When is your favourite time to stare out of your window?
