-In the herb garden this week, I added anise hyssop (pictured), chamomile, a new parsley plant, the sad rosemary from the front porch, and a bunch of basil.
-J pulled my lemon verbena nearly out of the ground while trying to remove last year’s dead stem. It looks sad, but it hasn’t died completely and it’s been over a week, so I think it’ll make it so long as it stays watered while its root system recovers.
-A bountiful mess. The mint and oregano continue to require control, they are so plentiful. Lamb’s quarters have been providing regular additions to our dinners. The leaves never get as big as pictures I see. Not sure it it’s a different variety or not a great spot for them, but we’re eating well either way.
-A tulip poplar planted itself here. It’s welcome for now, as I love these, but this really isn’t a good permanent location for such a big tree. I’ll have to relocate it eventually.
-The coneflowers are getting chewed up by the Japanese beetles, but they’re good nonetheless.
Sat outside today, planning my shrine garden and working on my rune studies.
March 13 2017 Apache Chili Pepper, Bell Pepper and Devils Tongue seedlings! I killed one of the Apache Chili Pepper cups as well. Sheet happens. I snatched 1 Apache Chili Pepper from a plant at Home Depot/Canadian Tire last year, dried the seeds- now I'll grow my own. ;) haha I snatched some Columbine seeds too, I can't wait to plant them and see what colour I get! I also started some tomatoes the other day. Russian Ruffled, Zebra Tomato, Ground Cherry, Red Tomato and Red/Black Cherry tomatoes!
Cool beans. #howmygardengrows #notahomestead #garden2017
Lil post-rain garden update:
-I put up a little white fence around the main beds to stop our friends’ puppy from barrelling through the plants. It sort of works, but also the garden kinda looks like it’s on purpose now! I’ve got tomatoes in there, dino kale, and 5 okra plants, because even though I don’t love okra I’d like to be sure I’ll succeed at something this year, and it’s hard to fail at okra in NC. The big sheet of plastic held down by beekeeping equipment is an attempt to kill the grass over there so I can make more beds in time for fall planting.
-This is my little hugel bed that the grass has attempted to swallow and Omie has tried to excavate, and I didn’t even plant anything in it this year, but those field peas just keep planting themselves! I’m just mowing around it to try to keep it manageable; beans starting to form now. I’m considering a trellis.
-Comfrey rocking out in the back. Harvested a good quantity for mulch/fertilizer a few weeks ago, and you can’t even tell. Time to take a bunch for medicinal preparations, I think.
-I’m trying pruning my tomatoes this year to help prevent disease. Good air flow + keeping leaving higher off the ground. These 3 ended up too close together, so they can use the help.
