Harvest Moon, Gareth Kemp

Harvest Moon is part of a series of 'landscapes' made up of various and repeating motifs, and although the paintings don't have any figures in them, remind us of man's intervention in the landscape. These motifs that appear in the paintings act as narrative clues, cross-referencing and evoking each other. There might be a blurring of foreground and background, disruption of scale, perspective and pictorial space, and a shift between internal and external space.

Crow Moon, Gareth Kemp

This references a detail in a painting by Friedrich, The Chasseur in the Forest (1814), in which a Crow appears on a tree stump. My painting shows a raven under a pink moon, cawing its farewell to the season – the crow moon traditionally being the final full moon of Winter.

Time of the Season, Gareth Kemp

This painting is both complex and ambitious. It was built up in layers and has changed dramatically during the painting process. It unites many thoughts and reference points including historical painting, the artist's studio, internal versus external space, and pictorial space. The tree forms reference Goya's Disasters of War.
