I had an interview a few weeks ago… It went pretty well, though they brought up the recent topic of my dog, Gary Frick… I didn’t much want to talk about it, but I knew people were curious, so I went ahead.
“It wasn’t like she was that old or anything…” I had explained. “It just came out of nowhere. One day, while I was at work, I got a call from Nancy. She told me… I-I don’t remember it clearly… But she told me. Gary Frick had gotten sick. She had thrown up in our room. It wasn’t really all that unusual, though. Dogs get sick, too. So, I told Nancy that if Gary did it again later that she should take her to the vet. I wasn’t too worried, you know… I-I-I… It wasn’t a big concern, because I figured Gary had just eaten something that upset her stomach, you know? But anyway, I didn’t really think much of it, and since Nancy didn’t call me back, I figured that Gary was doing okay. I just went and did my job. I think we had Ricky Gervais, or something, on the show that night. I’m not entirely sure, really. I don’t remember which day Nancy called me… So, I went home and things went pretty smoothly for a while. But after about a week, Nancy called me up again, telling me that she had noticed Gary not eating. And, by that time, I was already in the middle of Mono rehearsal, so there really wasn’t much I could do. I told her to watch Gary and make sure she ate something, and I’d take her to the vet when I got home. Well… The vet didn’t say much of it. He looked at Gary and basically told me the same thing I was thinking… That Gary just had like… The flu or something. He gave me some medicine to give to her, and I went on my way. Well… The medicine didn’t help at all, so I ended up taking Gary to a different vet about a month later… It turned out she was sick and not eating because she had cancer and it was pretty bad… He said he would do what he could, but… There… There was no guaranteeing anything.”
At this point, as you can imagine, I was getting pretty emotional. My hands were shaking, and I had to wipe my eyes and all that jazz. It’s still pretty hard to talk about, now, but I’m not quite as emotionally impaired by it.
“They started doing all the tests and stuff, and they even tried chemotherapy… I did everything I could to keep Gary alive. I didn’t want her to die… But… I-I-It… It got to… To the point that there wasn’t much else we could do…”
I told them to shut off the cameras and to give me a moment to collect myself… I spent a good ten minutes in the men’s room, crying, before I was able to compose myself enough to speak again. They were surprisingly understanding, and asked me if I wanted to keep the cameras off. I said they could turn them back on, of course…
“Sorry about that. This is still pretty hard for me to wrap my head around… A-Anyway… I talked with Nancy to the vet last Monday, and… And we decided to put her down. I… I didn’t want Gary to have to keep going through all this crap… I felt it was best to just put the poor thing out of her misery… Nancy agreed, of course, so we took Gary home yesterday, so she could be comfortable, and we made sure she was happy and in as little pain as we could… I-I-I… I think what the hardest part about it was burying her. She was only a few years old… It was… It was hard to say goodbye…”
At this point, the interviewer gave me his well-wishes and told me how sorry he was for my loss… We wrapped things up, and I left. There’s really not much else to it, really… If you read through this, I just want to thank you. I needed to get it all off my chest. I appreciate you paying attention. Hope you have a nice day, a decent week. Stay safe.
Always, Jimmy Fallon
And of course, Gary Frick Jr.
I imagine this is what they’ll be doing tonight. Happy 4th Of July everyone! Have a fun day/night!
