It was my first time editing a screenshot, a lot of new techniques and so much fun to try! Please enjoy Afro-Latino Gary (from the show Final Space)

Thought process & Rambles below

Gary is Afro-Latino. Dad is Mexican; Mom is African Australian

Gary’s story is about isolation and overcoming it, so by making him Black, I felt that added a layer of complexity which made that theme more powerful

A Black boy, raised in a single parent household, who lost that parent around 10 – 13 years old, then spends the next ~20 years alone, raising himself, and doing what he needs to survive

The inspiration for Gary being Latino comes from Canon Gary’s incredibly simplified Spanish (“muy bueno spicy lady” . . .)

I loved the added tragedy of having Gary's dad being too busy with the Infinity Guard. He always imagined he’d have the time to teach his son Spanish later in life, until he didn’t

I had the intent to also MBC Gary’s mom but did not get that far. I love her though and have been thinking a lot about the diaspora of African Australian’s and how it resonates with her theme of never fitting in, never truly having a home
