In 1983 photographer Deborah Turbeville cast her gauzy gaze over the freshly minted New York apartment of her friend Paul Walter. An inveterate collector with wide ranging and, often, idiosyncratic caprices, Walter just moved into his new East River apartment, which he had collaborated on with architectural designer Mark Kaminski and interior designer Mark Hampton, whose sole role was to accommodate and curate Walter's ever-expanding collections. Turbeville's otherworldly photography, featured in House & Garden magazine that year, imbue these now famous rooms with a veil of mystery and yearning as the contents of the late collector go on auction with @christiesinc NYC this September. In the living room a table made of carton-pierre, a form of papier-mâché designed to look like stone and wood, takes center stage amidst chairs of myriad styles and periods in seeming conversation. The large modern painting is by Gary Stephan. #paulwalter #collector #photography #deborahturbeville #architect #markkaminski #interiordesigner #markhampton #thebes #stool #egyptianrevival #furniture #godwin #armchair #robertadam #rug #ethereal #atmosphere #thecollectors #nonchalance #modernart #garystephan #eclectic #endofanera #1980sdesign #interiordesign #theartofphotography #theartoftheroom
