...on the one hand, every part of this is well thought out and makes sense... and on the other hand, part of the tragedy of Ohtori was always that things couldn’t progress, things couldn’t escalate and reach a tipping point, everything was... stuck. I guess we’re back to seeing it as an alternate universe, then? Huh. It does make sense with how things were going, but Ohtori is eternal, so....
Also, I still don’t see how Anthy “killed” Akio in the movie. Everyone was treating it like that’s what happened, but we saw him... stumble out a window? She didn’t do that. Maybe I missed something? Are we supposed to assume she poisoned him?
Yeah, I really liked that Kozue scene when it came by because it felt like “yeah, fucked up kids react in unpalatable ways sometimes” but to have it be her only scene doesn’t do her justice. It is really, really hard to try and compress such a complex and ensemble-cast story into an hour and a half, and I do think they stumbled in several places. It was still enjoyable, but nothing close to the series.
Yeah, I didn’t think they’d been swapped either, though I see what you mean about their narrative roles. And the idea of this being the show’s Anthy... I don’t like it. I can see where it’s coming from, but I don’t like it. Yes, she’s more forward with Utena, but not in the way that someone who had been through so much with her would-- it really came across to me as that trauma response of trying to take control. Her throwing herself at Utena wasn’t helpful, you know? It just freaked her out.
...also, on a personal and somewhat silly note, I just found the ending of the show to be so hopeful and lovely, looking forward to her own quest, and because I didn’t like the movie as much I don’t want that to be the quest :p
