GIVE AND TAKE PART 2, RENEGADES || WIP INTRO

We’re just spending the days in waiting.  We have breakfast together, the five of us on the ground next to the fire, and it’s nice.  But it’s not home.

keol's dead and ava's dying.  nua and aber are trapped, with no idea where aber's parents are or what abigala is doing.  and bayan is simply going through the motions, serving miss lilly without a word on his lips.  who is sloan? where is penny? what are they going to do?

GENRE: dystopia, but otherwise realistic fiction

THEMES: romance, relationships, lgbt, polyamory, oppression, fighting, discovery, lost and found

STATUS: in progress, being published at royal road

LENGTH: 25 chapters

WARNINGS: swearing, (mentions of) smoking, suicide, sex

INSPIRATION: the chemical garden trilogy by lauren distefano (fever / wither / sever); also pretty much every other dystopia i’ve ever read

CHARACTERS: 

ABER -- he never thought he'd love his wife, but now she's is slipping through his fingers and he can't hold on, no matter how hard he tries.

NUA -- all he wants is to be safe.  all he wants is to read his books in peace.  all he wants is a life without fear.

KEOL -- ashes.  a memory.  a knife to the heart, her heart, and a ring on her finger.  

AVA -- the only thing all these people have in common, they think.  so now what, now that she's gone?

BAYAN -- an empty shell, a body without a soul or a will.  at least, that's what he wants you to think.  

SLOAN -- you've never met a stronger woman in your life, but why does she have to be so strong?

LILLY -- they run.  she follows.

ABIGALA -- lost in the wind, but drifting closer.  and yet even as she nears, aber fears she's drifting away.  

SHAN -- the head, the heart, and the shoulder to lean on.  

and PENNY -- the renegade.

i just did one of these but i’m going to do another one since @rhyaxxyn tagged me in one!!! this is also probably my favorite tag game.  her words were: CRUEL, OPPOSITE, ICE, and SILENCE, and i’m gonna do all three parts of give and take (well, as much as part 3 that i’ve written already)!!

cruel only shows up twice so far which is kinda wack, i thought it would show up a lot more.  here’s where it pops up in part 3:

She squeezes me tight and holds me, and I feel like a child again, before all of this, before they were taken away from me and before I was married and before Ava’s mother had twisted us all up into this cruel game that no one could win.

opposite only shows up twice too, both in part 2.  here’s one from chapter 21:

Ava’s the one who’s quiet and angry and always deep in thought, and Penny is usually the complete opposite, but now I see her in him.

ice shows up exactly once, in part 2 chapter 19, when ava is talking to the boys about her stint in the hospital:

“And, you know, they had cut me open to take stuff out and put stuff in, and so that hurt for a really long time and right after I woke up they knocked me out again so I could just sleep, and my brain hurt, inside my head.  The next time I woke up Bayan was rubbing ice over the stitches.”

and finally, silence shows up 19 times throughout the whole thing because there are quite a few awkward silences throughout the series.  here’s one from part one, chapter 3:

“There’s still Miss Lilly to worry about.”

I don’t answer, staring up at the ceiling.  All the doors are closed.  I wonder where Nua gets his books. 

“Nice ring, by the way,” he says after a few minutes of silence.  I sigh, looking down at my finger, and don’t answer.
