I remember back in '98 when we got our first Gateway computer and my Dad would stay up late teaching himself how to type. He would go onto Microsoft Word and type using the different fonts, then he learned how to change the color of the lettering, then he learned how to make head lines and bodies. So he started making his own fake newspaper and would print them out on the free colored printer that came with the computer. He'd come upstairs while my sister and I were watching TV and show us the newspapers and make us read them. They were all Regan era or pre Bill Clinton centered joke news stories. With an occasional "fluff piece" about one of our cats. We always laughed at the cat stories. Seeing my dad's concern over the fact that we only seemed to enjoy the cat stories, my sister and I would force a laugh at his more politically aimed comedy. He wanted to know what we found funny about them, or what we liked most. Looking back, maybe it never occurred to him that his audience was just two girls at 9 and 12 years of age. But we would answer with something like "It's funny that... the... word airplane is always in purple..." or "You made Bush sound really dumb!" He would scowl over his reading glasses that made his eyes about 3 times bigger, take back his papers from us and say "You guys just don't want to get it do you? Watch your fucking cartoons and rot your brains." Then go back downstairs, leaving us silent and confused. I bring this up because I feel like my dad every time I make a text post on tumblr.
