Gautam likes to take regular breaks from his office and all the things that are attached to it - meetings, emails, his phone - by leaving these things behind and going for regular walks. Minus the distractions, he has time to really reflect - which gives him perspective and better focus.

Challenges & Successes

The initial challenges were plentiful - although Gautam and his co-founder had a lot of knowledge and experience in the startup world between them, neither of them had ever been involved in the food industry. Core attributes of the industry like distribution, warehousing and labelling became massive learning curbs that had to be mastered very quickly.

Gautam and his partner dove head first into a completely new world and literally launched a business online before even having a product. They were massively successful because at the end of last year they’d already shipped a million boxes! Even more impressively, they’re still growing exponentially every month and expect those numbers to be much higher by the end of 2014.

The Future

Gautam states they’re only 2 years into a 10 year plan - and although obviously not wanting to reveal too much, they clearly have massive plans - for vertical and horizontal development for the company. While now they just focus on selling snacks online in a subscription model they will definitely expand beyond snacks and perhaps into the offline realm too.

Learnings

With massive growth - and at such unprecedented rates, also comes a necessity to be flexible. While Gautam was involved in every aspect of the business in the beginning, he now primarily deals with managing his team of 60 employees. Young entrepreneurs therefore need to realize that they will often have to change their expectations in terms of their roles in a growing business. The entrepreneurial journey can also be quite an emotional one - and it’s vital to focus on the long-term goal rather than getting caught up in the daily ups and downs; ‘no matter how bad you think something is, it’s usually never actually that bad.”
