No, Anon, I don’t think that is the reason why Magnus looks so upset in those stills. Because I think the thing you mentioned will most likely happen in episode 9 and I’m hoping it will not play out like some artificial drama just to stir things up between Magnus and Alec.
I believe the reason why Magnus looks sad is because I am guessing that Alec is in danger? Like, the institute is under attack and there were no pics of Alec, Izzy and Simon. So.... yeah, maybe Alec is hurt??? Or Magnus just knows that he is been fighting there and he can’t help him because he has stuff of his own to take care of? I dunno. Something like this, I suppose. And I really hope that my babies will be okay in the end because duh.... all the stuff Alec went through this season? Jeez, just give him a break and a lazy day on the couch with Magnus to just relax and kiss his boyfriend senseless. Just saying....
