At 20, I got a job that ended up turning into my career. At 21, I bought a house, and my “dream car,” (don’t be jealous, it’s a Subaru Crosstrek). And not long after my 22 birthday, I was asked to step up and supervise at my job. Things going in my favor, right?
At 20 and 21, all I wanted was a relationship, someone to call mine, but relationships have never been a strong point for me. I decided I’d just go about my life, and do me, and get the physical aspect when/if I wanted it. It made sense, it was easy, and sex didn’t come with attachments or strings.
At 22, I broke the only rule I made for myself: never mix sex with feelings.
It was then, I realized, I had my life in order: a career, a house, a car. I had the materialistic things. I’d spent so much time trying to protect myself, that I don’t know the other part of it. That nothing mattered without someone to share it with.
I got played by a 19 year old college student, granted I did get feelings fast, and I gave everything I had, but it wasn’t his fault.
But I’m not here to say that having someone is everything. He made me realize that I still had growing up to do. He made me realize that I do have my goals in order, I just need to take care of me.
I’m here to tell you, heartbreaks aren’t always a bad thing. Sometimes you need them to realize you still have work to do.
So thank you. I wish you the very best. I hope you do great at your tryouts, I hope you make the team. I hope you graduate school and become the doctor you’re working to hard for.
But boy, you did something no one else was able to do, and I hope you realize that you’re special, but I hope you also realize you’re on a very lonely path, that will give you all the finer things in life, but nothing materialistic, can replace everything I was willing to give you.
