"I..." What could she say? She hadn't expected to be faced with a bunch of yellow roses when she looked up from her phone but there they were and Dorcas looked so happy behind them. "They're beautiful," is what she eventually lands on, "not that you need a reason but, why?"

“And that’s not going to be for a long bloody time,” Alastor says gruffly. He hates this. It builds up in his chest and all he feels is panic, because he’s lost too many. Too many friends, too many family members, too many moments he’s owed with the people he cares about.

It feels a little strange to celebrate a birthday in the middle of everything but really Marlene thinks they could all use a little break so she goes big. The decorations are thanks to Margaret who’s been nice enough to offer her flat for the night, they’re on the childish side but she supposes it’s Margaret’s idea of a joke. “Dorcas!” she cheers, maybe louder than she meant to, “you look great.”

Her head is tilted to the sun with a smile, the warmth on her skin a good feeling even if it reminds her she should probably be in the library.
“Consider each day a miracle,” the words leave her mouth before she really thinks about them, a quote from her mother on her happier days, “which indeed it is, when you consider the number of unexpected things that could happen in each second of our fragile existences.”
