What will this year be all about for you?
I will be honest this is one of my favorite times of the year. I remember being a student and looking forward to going back to class after summer break because ofter times it was like re introducing myself to classmates that I had not seen for what seemed like forever, when in actuality it was just a few months.
It seemed like every summer, there was some change that had taken place since that last day of school.
hair was longer, or maybe shorter
I had been lifting weights, or running laps so there was a physical difference.
youth camp was still in the back of my mind, or maybe the forefront
my voice was deeper, or perhaps a little cracky
and what seemed to be the greatest change of all, showing up in a vehicle that wasn't yellow, that I had driven myself.
And the school year, well it is brand new. I wasn't fighting my way out of the cellar of biology class, but had the same grade as everyone else! .......Possibilities, and aspirations.
So what will this year be about for you? What will be your drive? What will be your focus? What are your goals?
And what is your ultimate goal?
In one particular section of J.I. Packer's book; Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God, Packer's focus is on the call of Christ to make disciples. This is of course done in obedience to the command of Christ for all believers in Matthew 28 to share with others their need for a savior, and the availability of salvation, by God's grace, through Jesus. And of course we are familiar with that call, and understand that we ought to be obedient to it. But Packer encourages believers to consider two things that he points to as the driving factor in the obedience of the believer to making more disciples.
Love God, and have concern for His glory.
Love man, and have concern for His welfare.
So when you step back and consider the possibilities, and potential for this new school year and you ask yourself;
"what is my ultimate goal for this coming year?"
Let's be encouraged by the gospel, the glory of God, and his work on our behalf, to make disciples.
As middle schoolers, make disciples.
As high schoolers, make disciples.
As parents, make disciples.
While allowing our love for God, and our concern for His glory as well as our love for men, and concern for their welfare, to be the driving force behind our motivation.
To put in the simplest of terms, live in light of the Gospel.
Have a great day guys! Looking forward to a great year, and a great kick off next Wednesday night.
