there had been nothing for a while — no clear lines between sleep or death, just a stillness stretched so wide it might’ve been either. somewhere in the dark, pain pulsed quietly like it was waiting to be remembered, and now and then, a sound cut through: the muted hiss of fire, the whisper of snow against old glass, and something softer — the shape of someone’s voice, maybe, low and distant.
once or twice, there’d been the feeling of a hand wrapped in his, too warm to be imagined, too real to hold onto for long. it slipped away, like most things did here.
memory tried to crawl back through the cracks. it didn’t come in order — just in flashes that hit like cold water: the weight of knees on his spine.the snap of his ribs.
the breath knocked from his chest over and over again, until he’d stopped fighting, stopped screaming, stopped sounding like a man and started sounding like something already halfway gone.that club.
her face.
ellie.
he'd really tried to stay, for her, but he couldn't. he failed her. again. he’d thought he was dying. more than that — he’d been ready to. there was nothing left in him at the end, not defiance, not anger, not fear. just the dull, thudding ache of knowing this was how it ends. and maybe it was fair. maybe this was what he deserved.
but something pulled him back.
it started with warmth — not imagined this time, not slipping away. just warmth, steady and close and heavy at the edges of his body like firelight soaking into ruined skin. he could feel texture under him now — not floorboards or ice, but cloth. fabric. a mattress. he was lying down.
he could feel the weight of himself again.
and pain.
not the kind that stole you — that was already done. this was the kind that followed survival. the kind that hummed in broken bones and split muscle and nerves that hadn't quite forgiven you for what you let happen.
his leg throbbed like it was trying to crawl out of his skin. his ribs didn’t move right when he tried to breathe deeper. everything ached, and everything was real.
he groaned before he could stop it — low and guttural, scraped from a throat that hadn’t spoken in too long. his fingers twitched at the noise, brushing skin — not his own.
a hand. still in his. soft. steady. still holding.
he didn’t remember taking it. didn’t remember who it belonged to. but his grip closed around it just enough to say: i’m still here.
it took effort, dragging his body across whatever line he’d been caught behind for god knows how long. muscles complained. bones screamed. but he shifted slightly, just enough to feel the fire at his side and the warmth of another body nearby.
his eyes opened (at least one did) — cracked, dry, reluctant — and the ceiling above him blurred into view. wooden beams. bright light. too bright. a room he didn’t recognize. a fire burning somewhere close.
and breathing. soft, close. someone beside him.
he didn’t speak. couldn’t, yet. but his mind was already screaming questions — where was he, who was still alive, who had stayed. he’d thought he died on that floor. maybe he had. and maybe this was just what was left of him after.
his mouth felt like it hadn’t moved in days — because maybe it hadn’t — and when he tried to wet it, his tongue dragged heavy against the roof of his mouth. his lips parted like they were still learning how, and the sound that came wasn’t speech, not really. just a breath that remembered how to shape a name.
“…ellie…?”
barely there. barely voice at all. but it came out anyway — broken, hopeful, afraid.
the kind of word you said when you didn't know if you were dreaming again.

"Still mad?" He stood right outside the room, not daring to set foot inside, just in case her reply was 'yes'. "You know, sometimes going out for a walk helps to alleviate a sour mood. I do it all the time."
“No Poseidon, if it’s a girl I will NOT be naming our daughter ‘Princess Luna’.”
