It had been two days since that day in the carriage, and Penelope was still in a happy shock about what had happened. Neither the Ton’s murmurs of Cressida’s false claims about being Lady W nor the ill-placed words of her mother were enough to erase the smile off her face as she stood in her usual place at the first social event she had attended since her engagement. Her cheeks pinkened slightly as she watched him approach her with a smile on her face.

“Good evening, Colin,” she greeted quietly, her brown eyes sparkling at him. “I hope you are well this evening?”

if looks could kill, lewis’ withering glare would certainly have reduced the lord across the room to ash. for the most part, people at least had the courtesy to veil their insults and derision in thin attempts at politeness — that was difficult enough to stomach, but open mockery was something lewis could not abide without complaint. “ you heard him, doctor, ” lewis snapped, without taking his eyes from the offending man. “ i do not believe anyone deserves a second chance after such an affront. ”
