People from around the world rally for Palestinian liberation
East Germany, 1973
the more this one learns about the fall of the DDR, the more of a tragedy it seems. only a year before its fall, 86 percent of citizens said that they wanted a reformed version of socialism. when the country held its last elections, West Germany (FRG) promised not to interfere and then its political parties, predominantly the CDU, proceeded to buy the election for its sister party in the East, printing millions of flyers and newspapers, donating vast sums of money, providing free "advisors", and having its senior politicians tour the DDR to give speeches
when the two halves of Germany decided to unify, the FRG stripped the East of public assets, in violation of the constitutions of both East and West. the majority of wealth in the East had been held in common and administered by the state, and the initial plan would have divided it up amongst the people, giving each around 40,000 Deutsch Marks. instead, the Federal Republic sold off the East's enterprises on the cheap and lost money doing so
to make matters worse, the West forced through a currency union on terrible terms for the East. overnight, exports from the East rose in price by 400-500 percent and bankrupted major industries. 39 percent of the DDR's GDP had come from exports
the country wasn't unified, it was more like the East was looted

I’d never gotten too far in Killing Hope before. And I’ve certainly heard some of the subversive actions committed against the DDR, but reading a list of them gives you the real sense of their impact. It’s awful. @lilkakow
