A rather dark tintype gem portrait of J.M. McAlpine, undated, 3/4 x 1 inches (1.6 x 2.4 cm). The “gem” moniker is reference to the small size of these tintypes, which were inexpensive and could be worn as buttons or placed in lockets. The final two images have been modified in Photoshop for clarity.
