End of Chapter 3
The medical staff were just as perplexed as he was. They were used to voidlings but apparently not of the Novari persuasion. They would do what they could to keep her hydrated and comfortable but it wouldn’t be long before someone would be contacting the Union for help if that didn’t work. He just hoped his father would get there first. They didn’t need the council or worse the GHA questioning them as to why two Union officers would even be so far from their legal jurisdiction. He could only imagine how poorly that would go.
Hayden puzzled at what he meant by that for a moment... was he going to cooperate? Would he submit to a scan and verification? Seemed unlikely and in following moments those suspicions were quickly confirmed.
Lost in thought he hadn’t noticed until just then the whole room had stopped. While still conscious of everything he couldn’t move on his own will but the awkward fool of a man was clearly behind him. He could sense that much at least.
“You mean well kid but there’s nothing anyone here can do to help with this.” The redhead said as he crossed back through the entry, “And I am not letting your people get their paws on her in this condition. You understand I think what they’d do to her.”
Then without another word, he walked from the alcove and disappeared leaving the nurses to mumble uncomfortably to each other about what they just witnessed. So much for keeping the local authorities out of this, there was no way that wasn’t the start of a rumor.
“Is it the eyepatch? I know a lot of people don’t like it very much but I assure you without it things are leagues more unpleasant.” The man continued to ramble on awkwardly. If this was who he said he was Hayden was surprised at how incredibly inept he was at articulating just about anything.
“Or perhaps I should have cleaned up a bit more? I hear some women like a guy with beard... Fucking hell.... I swear I used to be a lot better at this...”
Didn’t this man have like an inexcusable number of children with several women? There’s no way that is Bastian Yager.
“You’re going to make me do this the hard way aren’t you?”
“Sam? Captain Eagan??!” Hayden rushed to her side, she did not stir or so much as twitch. Her skin was warm and face lined with black glistening veins. “By the black girl! What have you gotten yourself into?!”
Implants tripped at a void fluxuation a few miles out of town. Surprising how far from the ship it was but perhaps in her quest for... whatever she was after.. Samus had gotten reckless? Or maybe she meant to abandon it in an effort to save her own skin. He almost wouldn’t blame her, his family could be absolutely ruthless when crossed. It was in this soup of worry that he stumbled upon her... laying in silent slumber in the grass.
At first he felt a wave of relief, perhaps she’d fallen asleep while working on something? As soon as the thought left him though that momentary joy turned to dread.. Samus Eagan has never slept. Samus Eagan doesn’t need sleep.
“She probably changed her appearance...” He sighed to himself as he came upon her scent in the crew quarters, “She has to be close...no way she’d leave things like this if she didn’t think she’d be able to get back quickly.”
His father only had said to get the ship back, that things would be better for all of them if she did not return with him but made her way quietly back to her own kin. He could do that but truthfully he worried about her. Maybe he didn’t have a right to but he still did and just wanted to be sure she hadn’t gotten herself into some trouble. Sam had always been good at finding trouble.
His luck seemed to hold as he pushed into the core of the vessel. Nothing, no one.
He wasn’t sure what he’d say to her when and if he saw her again but for now at least his future would no longer be in jeopardy. His mother could rest easy that he too would not be sent into exile over trusting a Novari as his father had before him.
