Childhood Socialization and Disney Unit Post

When you were little did you ever want to play with toys that weren’t considered “for you”? I know for a fact that I did not like playing with Barbies. WAIT WHAT!? A girl that doesn’t like Barbies? There must be something wrong with her! No, as a matter of fact there is something wrong with our society for putting labels on items, and which items should be for whom! This is directly related to corporations that produce these items. The items themselves and ads give off an identity pertaining to either boys or girls. Disney does a fantastic job at enforcing these norms with gendered toys and with hegemonic structures. Girl toys include dolls (parenting), kitchen sets (cooking), doll houses, and sorts of items that don’t require much creativity or critical thinking. On the other hand boys have Legos, building blocks, and all sorts of things in which to use creativity. These gender roles enforce hegemonic structures because girls are seen to be the caretakers in a family situation.

Disney does a great job enforcing these things. A lot of their movies enforce the hegemonic roles and men and women. Cinderella is my absolute favorite Disney movie. But then I start thinking about it and her happiness lies on being with “prince charming”. Another instance where a woman’s life should revolve around a man. This is teaching our young girls (and boys that watch this) that this is what women should seek and live for. That their happiness depends on a man. This is exactly what we are trying to change as a society. The video we watched in class with The Bechdel Test is a prime example of how many movies (not just Disney) participate in these societal norms. The test is so simple, just at least two women in the movie, that talk to each other, and talk to each other about something other than a man. Many movies fail this test. That is a huge problem. If movies are following this, then TV shows and ads and everything else in the media is following this. And this just another contribution to why we have hegemonic roles in our society.

  But to change Disney, and change the idea of gendered toys, we need to not give in to these money makers. But that isn’t going to happen so easily. And of course 5 year olds aren’t going to think “I’m not going to buy that doll because it enforces hegemonic norms!” Ya right, so basically our society as a whole needs to be more educated on this. We’ve made some improvements with TV shows and toys contradicting the norms. Hopefully we continue and improve! J
