Rant ahead. You’ve been warned.
I just love the conversations I have with my father.
Today while I was cooking dinner, we got into the discussion on which TV I’m bringing to college, so they know which one to give away (we have 2 really old tvs that aren’t being used). I told him I need to find out what sort of jacks my roommate’s game system uses before I can be 100% sure which one to bring.
Anyway, my roommate hasn’t been responding to the texts I’ve sent. It doesn’t surprise me. She usually lets her phone die anyway. He suggested I call her.
Except I’ve already stated that my roommate despises when people call her. She has trouble understanding what people are saying through phone speakers, and I respect that. (I tried calling anyway just to please him. She didn’t answer but I left a message and a text).
Anyway, cue argument about how TECHNOLOGY IS MAKING US LOSE KEY ASPECTS TO CONVERSATION! and I’m like “Dad, they said the EXACT same thing when telephones came out.”... he doesn’t believe me about that but I know it’s true because it happens EVERY fucking time a new technology comes out.
I jump to the defense of technology. “Thanks to texting” I tell him “The literacy rate has gone up. Kids are reading AND writing at a younger age and more frequently than ever before.”
He then tries to say how children today aren’t held to as high a standard as they were when he was a kid. “WHEN I WAS IN SIXTH GRADE I WAS LEARNING ALGEBRA!”.... completely ignoring the fact that when he was in sixth grade he went to a private catholic school. I can nearly GUARANTEE that the public school sixth graders did NOT learn algebra, but a LOWER level of math than what current sixth graders learn.
He drives buses for the local PUBLIC school district, not to mention the fact that the schools he runs routes for regularly have lower test grades than the school I went to and many families in the poverty bracket. YOU CANNOT COMPARE THIS TO A PAMPERED MIDDLE CLASS CATHOLIC PRIVATE SCHOOL EXPERIENCE!
“YOU AND YOUR BROTHER WERE (are, I corrected him) GIFTED AND TALENTED! THIS WAS BECAUSE YOU TWO READ SO MUCH WHEN YOU WERE LITTLE!” uh, no it fucking wasn’t. The “Gifted and Talented” category is just a pretty name for kids who weren’t being stimulated by the standard method of teaching. it has NOTHING to do with our general intelligence, and was sure as hell not because of our reading habits. There are PLENTY of dare I say “unintelligent” kids in the “Gifted and Talented” category, and plenty more who are gifted and talented who have never given two shits about reading.
DON’T MOCK MY GENERATION OR THE GENERATION BELOW ME OR THINK THEIR EXPERIENCES ARE COMPARABLE TO YOURS! is what I’m trying to get at here.
