The Generator Blog Post
The Generator located at 40 Sears Lane in Burlington VT, is a great community workshop to generate innovation and creativity through collaboration. It was founded in 2013 to be a makerspace which offers a variety of workstations and classes that allow people to develop ideas and grow their personal businesses. Classes offer workshops on how to use the tools at the locale, such as the woodshop tools and the 3D printer. Classes range in price from about $60 up to $100 but it’s only $80 for a membership per month, which allows you the use of a studio space along with any of the equipment you’re certified to use. The Generator has partnerships with UVM and Champlain College that provides a discounted membership.
As I visited The Generator I noticed how it felt like a very open community which allows for a lot of ideas to breed and comfortable for people to collaborate on projects. It also has a very lax feel, allowing pets, family, and even allows trusted responsible members 24/7 access of the facility. Overall it was very welcoming and inviting to new members. The aspect of sharing ideas and knowledge is another keystone of the facility, members say they always learn something new by working together. There is also a lot of individual work on display, such as jewelry, woodwork and 3D print outs. Seeing all the variety of creative work is very awe inspiring. The variety of classes alone offer a wealth of experience in a wide range of skills. It’s definitely a community worth being apart of especially if you’re trying to innovate your creativity.
