Or how young Tony Stark became Iron Man.
Tony's life had been pretty much sheltered. His injuries had been minor, mostly caused by accidents in the lab or his father's anger when Tony was younger. His emotions fuzzy and indistinct made more so by a constant shroud of alcohol. He did his best to keep things that way.
And even when he was 17 and his parents were in a car crash, he did his best to dull his senses further. He doesn't remember large chunks of that year. His mom and dad's funeral is forever lost to a bottle of thousand-dollar whiskey.
At 21 he took over Stark Industries, turning the company around, raising it to the skies with smarter investments and better weapons. But that was when his life also took a turn for the worse.
After a weapons presentation in a military base in Afghanistan, he was ambushed almost killed by one of his own weapons. His chest was torn open, a battery was shoved inside it. Then torture came and he was forced to make weapons for his captures. Or so they thought. He made the first Iron Man armour and killed his captors, and was finally able to taste his freedom once again.
But his story did not end there, he was found by the TVA, the agents claimed that he had broken the Sacred Timeline. He was supposed to be dead. He shouldn't have survived the torture in the cave.
He escaped once again by killing them and then he was found and returned home.
Instead of shutting down the weapons manufacturing, he kept going, creating greater weapons of mass destruction. He had been overtaken by rage and fear, anxiety. He wanted to be ready for when they would come for him again, because they would come. Rhodey, Tony's best friend turned his back to him, as he was unable to reason with Tony, find a middle ground and was unable to him with his severe anxiety, the nightmares. He couldn't get him to sleep or eat as Tony's sole focus was making upgrades on the suits and weapons.
Then SHIELD came after Tony. They started asking about the weapons he had made, who gave him the Intel to make them. They demanded he hands Iron Man over to them but Tony refused. His Aunt Peggy who was head of SHIELD at that time, attempted to reason with him, guide him on the right path again, and get him to turn over the suit, co-operate with their demands but he wouldn't budge. Tony can still remember the disappointment in Peggy's eyes. It still haunts him, the betrayal. She was the only family he had left and he had let her down, betrayed her trust and love.
It was around the time when Tony realised that he was being poisoned by the palladium in the arc reactor, that he started to change.
Dr. Strange's mentor, The Ancient One, found Tony. Told him that there was a cure but Tony didn't deserve it, nor the suit with everything he was doing. She took the suit away, erased him from existence, nobody knew him, nobody knew of Iron Man. She went on to show Tony what was going to happen to him. What had happened to another Tony who didn't find the cure.
The palladium was going to affect Tony's body, his mind, it was going to drive him to insanity. Tony begged for her help as he didn't want to end up like that but she refused again, repeated that he didn't deserve it until he had changed.
She took him through portals to warzones, cities under attack, she showed him what the weapons he was making were really doing. He saw innocent people die, men, women, children. He saw them praying for their lives, clutching each other tightly, hoping that the bombs wouldn't hit their houses, that they wouldn't go off, and it horrified Tony even more.
Tony then started fighting for someone other than himself. Started protecting the people while at the same time he was trying to find a cure.
But time was passing and he was getting weaker and weaker. He couldn'tfigure out the riddle of his heart. He searched his father's files, trying to puzzle it out, went through the periodic table, trying to find an element that could replace palladium, or something similar to it, but there was nothing, nothing. He was starting to give up on himself, promised that if he was going to die, he would die fighting for the people, so he made another suit, one that would function automatically even if he died during a battle.
Then SHIELD found Steve, his freesbee and everything, and it sparked an idea in Tony's mind. He hadn't tried vibranium, he had completely forgotten about it. So he went to work, trying to make recreate the element on his own and synthesise it and in the end it worked.
The Ancient One appeared once again, congratulated him from getting down from his high horse and for figuring out the riddle of his heart. She allowed him to return to my life, and this time he shut down SI, got rid of the weapons, but continued helping people, made foundations for those who lost their houses and couldn't feed themselves, needed money, looked into alternative ways of electricity, intellecrops for where nothing could bloom.
And things were okay, the world was safe Tony had his friends, his aunt, and he wasn't dying.
