— Sakura as a genjutsu-type, what does it mean and how useful is it?
The information presented in this post has been checked and revised. My aim is not to hate or to discredit any of the characters mentioned. Please read about me for further information.
This post will contain evidence in picture format directly from the manga Naruto (1999 - 2014) created by Masashi Kishimoto and published by Shueisha in 1999. I will also use information from the official databooks of Naruto.
This informative post will analyze the concept of genjutsu-type, how it was introduced in the series and that are the requisites to become a ninja of this classification; I will also shortly explain why it has never been considered in her profile. I will use information present in the novels because it includes character development within canon compliance.
This meta will be crossposted in AO3.
I give my permission to use or share this thread with informative purposes as long as you credit me.
I do not support the anime or the work of Studio Pierrot in regards to Naruto because I consider it over exaggerated and beyond biased. Furthermore, these fillers include some actions that these characters are unable to do in the canon according to official sources and they also generate unnecessary debate.
Please, take this into consideration.
Numerous times have Sakura’s genjutsu abilities been highlighted by the author or other characters, however, it has never gone past simple identification and illusion releases from her part. The great misuse of this technique has left fans disappointed.
In the series, Sakura has displayed knowledge in ninjutsu, taijutsu and genjutsu, among other jutsu styles, being an all-round ninja and the most versatile kunoichi. From the start, her ability in hand seals, intelligence and genjutsu have been described to be her most prominent talents.
Opposite to ninjutsu and taijutsu, the difference with genjutsu is not used as much as the other arts and there are not many ninja suitable to for it. For this reason, there are few shinobi able to identify it or use it as a means of battle. It is the case of Sakura Haruno.
The first databook describes genjutsu as the ninja art of playing with the enemies senses, hypnotizing them into a world of illusion that deceives their senses that causes mental or physical exhaustion. Because it is an illusion, it does not damage the real body.
Like ninjutsu or taijutsu, genjutsu needs stamina to be performed. In the case of ninjutsu and genjutsu, this stamina needs to be converted into chakra, the energy that fuels the jutsu. Then, these jutsu are exerted through hand seals. Genjutsu has different techniques that need its own unique signs in order to be performed.
The number of ninja that use genjutsu is reduced because it does not really inflict physical damage on the same level as ninjutsu or taijutsu does. However, a well performed illusion will paralyze the victim and the intensity will make them experience the horrors as it was happening in reality.
For example, the Uchiha Clan are natural users of genjutsu due to the ocular powers of the Sharingan. They are able to see through genjutsu and also perform it without the use of hand seals, only a glance is enough. Some users like Itachi Uchiha are able to perform a very powerful genjutsu called Tsukuyomi, which only users of the Mangekyō Sharingan are able to counter.
Other ninjas like Kurenai Yūhi, who is regarded as Konoha’s best genjutsu user, are experts in the use of illusions in battle. In her case, she uses hand seals to perform top-notch genjutsu and fight the proficient user Itachi Uchiha. Her signature technique is called Demonic Illusion: Tree Binding Death, a jutsu created during the reign of Hashirama Senju and passed down to generations of Konoha shinobi.
Genjutsu is not only an art used in battle or to exert mental damage to an enemy, it can also be used to manipulate people into believing they are in another place. For example, Izumo and Kotetsu used genjutsu to trick the rookies into believing they were on another floor during the Chūnin Exams.
The manga explains the concept of genjutsu very late in the series, in part II to be exact. Jiraiya describes it as a very advanced technique that requires high intellect and skill in order to control the chakra flow and overwhelm the five senses to become credible.
Due to these requirements, not everybody is cut out for genjutsu. Jiraiya mentions that Naruto is not exactly suitable to use this ninja art, probably because he is not very intelligent and lacks chakra control enough to break it. Likewise, Jiraiya himself is not suitable either despite being a very skilled ninja and regarded as one of the Legendary Sannin.
Moreover, genjutsu is revealed to use Yin Release and it must be a quality present in any ninja that wants to use this art. Every member of the Uchiha Clan possess Yin Release because their predecessor, Indra Ōtsutsuki, inherited the “mind” of his father. This element fuels their genjutsu skills. Other ninja able to use genjutsu like Sakura Haruno, Orochimaru, Kabuto Yakushi and the Second Mizukage also possess this element.
The only exception is Hashirama Senju, although it is unknown why Masashi Kishimoto forgot to add this element in his databook, he does indeed have Yin Release because he can perform genjutsu.
Yin and Yang elements exist outside the five main elements and they are probably innate. Not having Yin affinity means being unable to use genjutsu. Naruto inherited the Yang element from his Uzumaki heritage and he was not in possession of Yin Release before Minato sealed Kurama’s Yin half inside him, making him unfit for genjutsu in affinity and also in chakra control and intelligence.
Despite the low number of users, it is necessary to know how to fight against illusions. Jiraiya explains that, in order to reverse its effects, the victim must disrupt their chakra flow to break loose from the caster’s manipulation, or have another person send chakra into them.
But not everybody is skilled enough to disrupt their own chakra flow or the ninja might not have an ally to get them out of the illusion.
There is another method that allows a victim to escape the genjutsu. Self damage will redirect the senses to the damaged area and revert the focus from the hypnosis. Examples of this include Sasuke Uchiha against Orochimaru and Shikamaru Nara against Tayuya. Sakura does not use this method.
With all the information given by the manga and the databooks, we know that genjutsu requires Yin Release, high intelligence, high skill with hand seals in order to perform them or to break them, and great chakra control to manipulate the enemy’s senses or to disrupt the chakra flow to disperse the illusion.
Sakura Haruno is a kunoichi naturally blessed with all the requirements to become a genjutsu expert: she possesses intelligence and analytical abilities above her fellow classmates; and she is also the most proficient in hand seals and the best chakra control of her generation. Of course, she also has Yin Release. Therefore, genjutsu has always remained her strongest skill from genin and to chūnin.
The first databook had already mentioned these qualities and highlighted her talent with illusions from very early on. It even hinted about Sakura being able to use first-rate genjutsu in the future. This is a detail that actually became true, just not in the field of performing it, only at dispelling first-rate illusions.
Her improvement has been notorious in the manga. As a genin, Sakura experienced her first genjutsu with Kakashi and she was not able to see through it. Later, she had trouble breaking Orochimaru’s powerful genjutsu in the midst of battle.
However, Sakura was able to see through them in calm situations to the point of breaking powerful illusions by the end of part I. She could realize that Izumo and Kotetsu had manipulated the door from the Chūnin Exams’ classroom, and she also broke a powerful genjutsu used by members of Otogakure when she was watching the exam’s finals, which solidified her ability with it for the years to come.
Genjutsu can be identified in many ways, for example, by sensing disturbances in another person’s chakra or their own, or possessing dōjutsu able to see through them or able to detect somebody performing them in the distance.
Karin, regarded as the best sensor-type in the series, can guess if genjutsu is being used by checking her own chakra flow or the environment. Sharingan, of course, can see through genjutsu and is the best weapon against them. Other dōjutsu like Byakugan can see if a ninja is casting an illusion in the distance, like Hinata Hyūga, but not being able to fight it.
But Sakura does not possess innate chakra sensing or dōjutsu. These abilities are typical of a sensor-type. Although Sakura does not have these exact abilities, there are many classes of sensor-type like those that use smell or eyesight or those like Sakura who use their own sensory techniques or summons with the ability to perceive chakra. I will explain why she should be considered a sensor-type in the future.
From the very few times Sakura comes in contact with genjutsu in the manga, her ways to identify it are by analyzing her surroundings for any disturbances in the environment. To some extent, it may be possible that she checks her own chakra flow, although it is unknown.
Not having any special abilities like chakra sensing or eye techniques but still being able to identify and break illusions prompt Kakashi to acknowledge her talent in genjutsu. This proficiency stems from her innate great intelligence, chakra control and perception.
Sakura’s style of breaking genjutsu is by using hand signs that allow her to disrupt her chakra flow and dispel it. She is also able to free others from the illusion by touching them or sending her chakra.
Despite being ignored by his sensei during her time in Team 7, Sakura not only owes her talent to her own skills but also to Kakashi, because he was the first one to introduce her to genjutsu. Although it was only one time, he let Sakura discover her own abilities by herself because he knew she was very intelligent and displayed the best chakra control of her generation.
The Last: Naruto the Movie novelization mentions that it had been Tsunade the one that taught Sakura methods to escape genjutsu. Still, I doubt it because Sakura got accepted by Tsunade due to her top-notch chakra control and intelligence, so she had the means from before her training even started. Moreover, she was already breaking powerful genjutsu before that training. Tsunade might have taught Sakura some methods (despite not having Yin Release herself) during their time together, but Sakura’s talent was on full display since earlier.
In fact, Sakura’s proficiency with genjutsu does not only mean she has a great talent for it, it means that she is a genjutsu-type. Kakashi refers to Sakura as a 幻術タイプ, Genjutsu-taipu not only in the manga but also in the anime.
Here is the anime equivalent that confirms that Sakura is indeed a genjutsu-type.
Some English versions have omitted this detail and translated it as being “adept at genjutsu” but it misses the point completely. Kishimoto deliberately chose to classify Sakura as a genjutsu-type and it is something unique to her.
This confirms that genjutsu-type does exist and is one more ninja classification just like sensor-type 感知タイプ, Kanchi-taipu. It is not recognized, but Sakura should be classified as medic-ninja and genjutsu-type (and sensor-type later due to her own technique). Kurenai should be classified as a genjutsu-type as well.
There are also other classifications for a ninja that are often forgotten due to the lack of information about them. Sakura was also described as a support-type 支援タイプ, Shien-taipu when she was a genin due to her inability to participate in direct battle. Other ninjas like Ino Yamanaka should also be considered a support-type due to her condition as a non-fighter, and field medic-ninjas in general.
What does it mean to be a genjutsu-type and what utility does it have in missions? As Sakura is the only active ninja to be classified as such, having a team member proficient in identifying illusions and breaking them can help with the success rate of the mission if the entire group falls into one. The genjutsu-type will be able to free themselves and then the rest of the group.
It can also be advantageous for a ninja in a solo mission, for example jōnins like Sakura herself. When facing a shinobi expert in genjutsu, their ability to break them will nullify the opponents strategy or ability, giving the genjutsu-type the advantage in battle.
As an adult, Sakura has grown immune to genjutsu, even the most powerful ones. In The Last: Naruto the Movie, Sakura was chosen to be in the Hanabi Rescue Team because of her medical ninjutsu, but her abilities to dispel genjutsu proved to be decisive for the mission's success.
When the Hanabi Rescue Team fell in the Gatekeeper’s genjutsu, Sakura was the only one to break free from it and also free the rest of the members. In fact, Shikamaru Nara, who is intelligent and perceptive like Sakura and who has also displayed proficiency with genjutsu as shown in the manga, is not able to identify the illusion.
Like she did as genin, Sakura’s way to identify genjutsu is by seeing its weak spots like distorted vision or anomalies in its effects. Because Sakura is familiar with the illusion's mechanisms, it is this ability to notice these details that makes her a genjutsu-type.
In order to break her teammates free from the illusion, Sakura sends chakra into their bodies to disrupt their chakra flow. It also looks like she is using medical ninjutsu, a technique that pours chakra into the body of a person to replenish their energies and heal them.
It is then confirmed that Sakura grew to be immune to genjutsu by 19 years of age.
But does this mean that she is completely immune to genjutsu? At 17, Sakura was not able to resist a direct genjutsu cast with the Rinnegan. However, that happened years before she came to be known as “resistant to genjutsu”. It is unknown if Sakura would now be resistant to genjutsu from a Rinnegan as an adult.
The real question is why has Kishimoto foreshadowed Sakura’s possibility to use genjutsu in the future but has never made it a reality. She was given everything that would allow her to perform high-class illusions: Yin Release, intelligence and chakra control.
She was given chances against Itachi Uchiha during the Kazekage Rescue mission and she performed excellently, but she has never come in contact with anybody proficient in it again. And the answer s probably what has been explained before: very few people use genjutsu in battle except from the Uchiha Clan.
But she could have still used this technique in battle right? Not really and there are arguments to validate it.
My first thought is due to Sakura’s battle style being centered on direct and visible physical damage, which is the total opposite of what genjutsu does. If Sakura used genjutsu, she would not be able to hit her enemies, but she could probably create very powerful illusions and it would add to her support condition as a medic-ninja. However, Sakura was trained to be a medic-ninja able to fight, the only one with Tsunade. It is already a big advantage being able to resist genjutsu because the enemy will always try to take advantage, but it is not for her.
My second thought leans more in the symbolism it represents: the Uchiha are experts in genjutsu and Sakura married into the clan as a foreigner able to resist one of their most powerful weapons. Just like Sakura’s water affinity is the complete opposite of the Uchiha’s fire affinity Great Fireball Technique.
It is something similar to “opposites attract” but that converge at the end: Sasuke is also able to resist genjutsu thanks to his Sharingan, Mangekyō Sharingan and Rinnegan; and Sakura is able to use Fire Release without being a fire type.
Sakura would marry into a clan experts in genjutsu and fire, but being able to fight both techniques; and, at the same time, she would learn how to perform their Fire Style and become a full-fledged clan member.
If genjutsu-type ninja are so important, why does nobody recognize Sakura as one? She is actually recognized as one, but people tend to forget it, especially those that do not follow the character more in-depth. Sakura was presented as a person adept at genjutsu, she was later confirmed to be a genjutsu-type and she finally became resistant to the most powerful of techniques. There was an introduction of the matter and a development.
Genjutsu is not used much in the series because it is not very useful to damage the enemy and there are also few ninja that have enough control to perform credible illusions. Also, it was almost conceived as something from the Uchiha and Sakura is an ally and member of this clan.
Out of all the times genjutsu was used in the manga, Sakura was included in few of them, but it has been confirmed from very early on that she is very proficient and worthy of the classification of genjutsu-type so it is actually canon and a unique skill.
However, there is only one genjutsu-type (and Kurenai) as opposed to the multiple sensor-type or medic-ninja, and even if there is more than enough information about what abilities a ninja proficient in illusions must have, it is normal that it has not been taken into account for her.
Therefore, Sakura is canonically classified as medic-ninja, genjutsu-type and has skills proper of a sensor-type since there are different sub-classes. Although she is not a natural chakra sensor, she makes use of her own created sensory jutsu, among other things.
End.
