Money
I'm only half way through Geography of Bliss but I think Weiner gets this spot-on:
"Qataris, like all nouveau riche, possess a strange mix of arrogance and insecurity. What they crave, most of all, is validation."
Isn't it nice when you read something and it feels like the author is spot on with his observations? Being from Indonesia this is a very appropriate piece of insight that I found frustrating while living there. It's refreshing to read that someone dedicates a whole chapter about this and whether it really equates happiness.
I've got a zillion thoughts on this, but I'll keep it in for another day. Who wants to listen to a Chinese Indonesian complain about money anyway?
I have read a lot of books but only a few have been considered life changing. I just finished this and I can say it has changed my mindset and my definition of happiness. #geographyofbliss
