This is a translation of an article that appeared in the August 2001 issue of Pythagoras. It is sixth in a series of six about nice formulas.

The average of 4 and 6 is equal to 5. But not always; somestimes you have to `average' numbers in a different way and it turns out that √24 is the `average' of 4 and 6.

You have a letter that you need to weigh. All you have is a nice pair of balancing scales whose arms are not quite of the same length. When you put your letter left you need 56 grams on the right to achieve a balance; with the letters on the other side you need 44 grams on the left. How heavy is the letter?

You can solve this problem using the formula `moment equals force×arm'. The letter weighs x grams; the left arm is l long and the length of the right arm is r. The first weighing tells us that x×l=56×r and the second weighing gives x×r=44×l. This then leads to the following equality 56/x=l/r=x/44 or x2=44×56.

We see that the weight of the letter is x=√(44×56)≈49.64 grams. That is a bit less than (44+56)/2, the normal average of 44 and 56. The number √(44×56) is also a kind of average of 44 and  56 and it is called the geometric average, or geometric mean, of these numbers. The normal average is called the arithmetic average or mean.

The arithmetic mean occurs in additive situations: if you have two pices of string of length a and b then two pieces of (the same) length (a+b)/2 are together of the same length is the original pieces. Conclusion: if L is fixed but a and b are allowed to vary then the area ab is largest when a=b, that is if the rectangle is a square. This is also known as the `isoperimetric inequality' for rectangles: every rectangle with circumference L has are at most L2/16.

Cauchy did not stop at two numbers; he saw that the inequality also holds for larger sets of numbers. For example for four numbers a, b, c, and d:
