Putting Down a Sewer - Music Postponed - Electric Light Company Progress - Blaze Put Out

LOCAL SHORT STOPS. FRESH. CRISPY GLEANINGS OF RECENT NOTEWORTHY HAPPENINGS.

Mr. Geo. A. Brush is putting down a sewer through the alley between Congress avenue and Colorado street, from Bols d’Arc, his main sewer.

The musicale that was to have been given by Miss Ida Tobin to-night will be postponed until further notice on account of sickness in the family.

The Edison Electric Light company have placed one of their main service wires in position across Congress avenue. They are pushing steadily ahead with their work.

Last night a box of ashes was taken out of the residence of Charley Kluze, 317 East Pecan street. The ashes were hot and set fire to the box, and flames were getting headway, when Mrs. Tiedeman, living next door gave the alarm, and Officers Gibson and Gassoway answered, broke open the door and put out the blaze.

NOTEWORTHY HAPPENINGS.

Yesterday was the first hot day of the season, but it was a cool day with Geo. A. Brush. He has in stock the greatest assortment of cherry, walnut and white wood refrigerators over in Austin. Bought for prompt cash, bought in car-load lot, and prices and goods are guaranteed. Ice cream freezers and water coolers.

Would Split Him Open With a Hatchet

Ice is a Good Thing But Sometimes it is Out of Place.

The white men employed on the Brush building being erected on Congress Avenue, have been buying ice during the heated term to use for their private use, and the negroes employed on the same building have been to barred from imbibing the cooling liquid. Well, on yesterday morning, Alex Mack, an negro employee, went to the bucket kept by these men and took up the dipper to help himself. Mr. Jas. C. Pitts, white employee, seeing Mack with the dipper in his hand, shouted to him to drop it, as he didn't propose to drink water after negroes, and he went up to Mac and not the Duper out of his hand. At this Mack became enraged and as Mr. Pitts stooped over to pick up the dipper from the ground he struck him down, and was about to pitch into him, when Mr. Sneider ran up to Mack with a hatchet in his hand, and told him if he struck Mr. Pitts he would split him open with the hatchet, or words to that effect. The negro hod-carriers crowded around the belligerents, and the white workmen were on hand waiting for the negroes to make some move when they were determined to sicken them at once. Before any one could interfere Mr. Sneider caught hold of Mack, and Mack attempting to get loose from his opponent, was cut on the arm near the elbow severely. Mr. Sneider states that the cutting of the negro was purely accidental.

Alex Mack is said to be a very impudent negro, and is ever ready for a row of some sort.
