Back to the Future
In 1817 Morris Birkbeck and George Flower founded "The English Settlement" in Illinois. In 1818 the two had a huge argument, because Flower had bigamously married one of the other settlers and Birkbeck disapproved.
They stopped speaking to each other entirely, and even established competing towns - Wanborough and Albion. Wanborough thrived for a while, but after Birkbeck's death in 1825 became a utopian commune and quickly failed.
Albion thrived, and even became the county seat of Edwards County in 1821. The residents of nearby Mount Carmel disagreed, though, and sent armed militia members to seize the county records by force.
The conflict eventually led Illinois to create a new county - Wabash County - so Mount Carmel could be a county seat and the two towns would stop pointlessly attacking each other.
