Innovator’s Mindset MOOC (#IMMOOC): When Less Is More and More Is Much, Much More

 “Less is more,” George Couros reminds us in the “Less Is More” chapter of The Innovator’s Mindset—part of the reading we’re doing during Week 5 of #IMMOOC (the Innovator’s Mindset massive open online course). But more can also be more—much, much more—we find if we go online to view the “Creativity requires TIME” video he mentions on p. 158 of the book.

 Given the challenge of drawing a clock in only 10 seconds, the young learners captured in the video produce first drafts—only the most rudimentary of renditions of what their imaginations produce when they return to the same exercise but are given a full 10 minutes to complete the task.

 It’s playful learning. Innovative. Productive. Engaging. Memorable. Transformative. And when see the finished products of this exercise in creativity in learning, we revel in the images of clocks as butterflies, kites, the face of a cat, and so much more. We understand that “less is more” when we help learners sift through less material at greater depth, and that more is much, much more when we provide time for creative, transformative exploration and reflection in learning.

Innovator’s Mindset MOOC (#IMMOOC): Paths to Strengths-Based Leadership

The path chosen is often as important as the destination sought, I realized again this week while exploring the chapter on “Strength-Based Leadership” in The Innovator’s Mindset as part of a Week 5 writing challenge in George Couros’s #IMMOOC (the Innovator’s Mindset massive open online course).

 Building upon the lessons contained within Tom Rath’s book Strengths Based Leadership: Great Leaders, Teams, and Why People Follow, Couros reminds us that we empower learners (and ourselves) when we “help them find what they love and create learning experiences that encourage them to develop their strengths” (p. 124)

 For me, this comes down to identifying intriguing paths that play to our strengths (while, as he notes, not “ignoring areas of weakness”); following them with the support of our friends, colleagues, and mentors; celebrating the successes to which they lead (or understanding that the inevitable failures are part of the much-longer path to success); and then reflecting on them privately as well as with other members of our learning communities in ways that contribute to the overall strength and development of those communities. That’s why we explore those paths—and then write about them afterward. It’s an essential element of our life-long learning journey.
