Earth Abides by George R. Stewart $3 Fawcett Crest Books (1977) This is my personally read copy. There are a lot of life lessons in here and it is a book that everyone should read. In this pleasant, low-key post-apocalyptic classic, nearly all the human race has been wiped out by a mysterious disease. Yet, as the title suggests, the rest of the world continues and barely notices we're gone. The cover artist is unfortunately unknown. . My Year of the Book - Day 149: Wait, you ask...isn’t Tuesday George R. Stewart day at Hacienda Hodgkins? Ah ha! Although Irving Stone (“The Agony and the Ecstasy,” et al) edited “There Was Light” (1970) for UC Berkeley’s centennial, GRS was actively involved in the book’s creation. In fact, I have some correspondence from 1945 between he and writer (and Cal grad) Edwin Corle (Day 77) discussing a potential book for the school’s 75th. Anyway, this is much more than a school history. It boasts essays by 39 Cal alums, and this copy carries the signatures of 16 of those fine people from various disciplines, including Stone, GRS, Edwin Pauley (namesake of UCLA’s pavilion), Bob Haas (White House fellow and future CEO of Levi Strauss) and Horace Albright, director of the US Forest Service under FDR. There are too many to list here, so check out the photos to see if you recognize the names others. Many of these first editions were signed at an on campus event attended by many of the essayists, and the other copies I’ve seen often feature different signatures. Most are signed on the FFEP like this one, but others carry autographs on the opening pages of the essays themselves. My Year of the Book - Day 107: Tuesday? Check. Another George R. Stewart book? Double check. “Sheep Rock” (1951) is the final and perhaps least known of what may be loosely defined as the GRS “Inanimate lead character trilogy,” a grouping which also includes the best sellers and BOMC selections “Storm” and “Fire.” No metaphors here; the book is literally about a rock formation in the Nevada desert (modeled after one GRS had himself explored) and the multiple generations of people who come to live and work in its shadow. My Year of the Book - Day 84: Wallace Stegner’s influence on the many writers he helped develop while in charge of Stanford University’s creative writing program is well documented. But Stegner’s good friend George R. Stewart, who taught across the bay at U.C. Berkeley, saw at least one of his English students find success in print as well. Idaho native Milton Lott, who began his initial novel in one of Stewart’s classes, went on to earn a Houghton Mifflin Literary Fellowship to complete the work. Published in 1954 as “The Last Hunt,” it was the first of three books based on the final days of the great buffalo hunts and hunters in and around the author’s native Idaho and the Montana territory. Said Stewart of his former student, “Milton Lott displays as promising a talent as has appeared in his generation.” “Hunt” was followed by “Dance Back the Buffalo” and “Backtrack” (1959 and 1965). Reminiscent of A.B.
