Perhaps one of my prettiest modern first editions. Translated in English. This story depicts an island where in a dream like state of half remembered truths or misremembered things…objects have gone missing from the island. Roses, perfume, depictions of foreign animals small things that when faded from memory and forgotten are almost unnoticed by citizens in their state of isolation and denial of what the black bagged and disappeared dissidents did to incur the wrath of draconian police surveillance. Mysteries whispered by everyone in hushed harsh tones as “they” enforce the forgetting of objects by erasing those who still cling to lost things…our reluctant main character makes the decision to circumvent these dangers in an attempt to save another…

THE GEM OF THE SEASON New York: Leavitt & Allen, 1856. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Item #164463 Good, deluxe Mother of Pearl inlay binding. Bound in black lacquered papier mache covers with front cover inlaid with mother of pearl. Has 10 plates called for, but lacks illuminated presentation plate. Chip on edge of rear boards, front hinge tender. The style of deluxe inlaid gift bindings was a short lived phenomenon, ranging from the 1830s through the mid 1850's. The papier mache bindings with the mother of pearl inlays were expensive to produce, and after the public's taste changed in the 1870s, they were rarely produced. So pleased to find this under the tree this year. Rare as a hardback, Jim Wayne Miller’s third full length book is probably his most influential and ends with his famous “Brier Sermon” poem. Miller signed this book to Nancy Carol Joyner, a prominent Southern and Appalachian literary scholar. Former president of SAMLA, she also put together the influential “Bloodroot: Reflections on Place by Appalachian Women Writers.” Pleased to find this association copy, and always glad to add to the Miller collection.
