Amour !
Love! When you hold us - No! but would you like the key to my room? -- Henry Gerbault (1863 - 1930), Le Rire (The Laugh; French Comic)
Sketches by Henri Gerbault and Albert Guillaume mentioned in Claudine à l’École by Collette.
[Claudine and Anaïs, two school girls are searching through lumber in the attic of their school. They find a pile of magazines.]
[”Naturally we had a look at them before bringing them down, and I found they contained The Aphrodite de Pierre Louÿs as well as some issues of the Journal Amusant. We entertained each other, Anaïs and me, with a sketch by Gerbault: Bruits de Couloirs, gentlemen in black suits were flirting with pretty Opera dancers in tights and short dresses, who gestured and giggled. The other students had gone downstairs but we lingered over some scandalous pictures by Albert Guillaume which made us laugh.”
Both Gerbault and Guillaume were risqué cartoonist of the Belle Epoque, it isn’t clear exactly which Gerbault sketch Collette has in mind, suited men and skantily clad dancers were one of his frequent topics, as in the top picture above, however, it is Guillaume who has a sketch called Bruits de Couloirs, the lower image above.
